Day by Day Itinerary: San Jose Galapagos Cruise South-East Islands

    DAY 1 | FRIDAY | Welcome to San Cristobal | D.

Upon arrival at San Cristobal Airport a guide will meet you, help you collect your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor. Settle into your standard cabin before heading to the Interpretation Centre.

Afternoon: Interpretation Centre at San Cristobal Island. The Galapagos National Park Visitor Center lies close to the port town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The center explains a series of natural circumstances such as the volcanic origins of the islands, their remoteness from the continent, its ocean currents, its special climate, the arrival of different species, and their establishment, among others.

    DAY 2 | SATURDAY | B.L.D.

Morning: Gardner Bay at Española Island. Located on the northeastern coast of Hood, Gardner Bay provides an excellent beach for relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, and the opportunity to watch the lumbering sea lions. Sharks can sometimes be observed in the crystal clear ocean waters.

Afternoon: Suarez Point at Española Island. This rocky land spot sustains one of the most impressive and varied colonies of sea birds in the Galapagos. Along the southern shore, high cliffs rise up from the sea affording spectacular views of soaring birds and of the blow hole where water spouts up to 50-75 feet into the air depending on the intensity of the surf.

    DAY 3 | SUNDAY | B.L.D

Morning: Post Office Bay at Floreana Island. A stop at historic Post Office Bay will take you back in time to when the crew of an 18th century whaling ship placed a wooden barrel out in good faith with the hopes that strangers would carry the letters or postcards placed in it to their destination by hand. Since this time it has been used by mariners and tourists as a post office. Apart from being the Post Office Barrel, this site was the landing area for some of the first colonists. We will continue to the north of the island and ascend to an elevated slope to enjoy a beautiful view from the Baroness Lookout. It is said that Baroness Eloisa von Wagner loved this place and spent several hours each day watching the horizon. Within walking distance, the ruins many believe to be her home can be found. From this lookout, the landscape covers the coastline from the Enderby islet to Post Office Bay, as well as Cerro Pajas, the pool of flamingos, and wide forest of Palo Santo.

Afternoon: Cormorant Point at Floreana Island & Champion Islet. Cormorant Point offers perhaps the best Flamingo Lagoon in the Galapagos; it is also one of the largest of the islands. It is situated between two tuff lava cones that give the area a special atmosphere. There are various species of shorebirds to observe besides just graceful flamingos; the most frequent are common stilts, white-checked pintails, and other migratory birds. The island boasts two distinct beaches: The Green Beach aptly named due to the high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the Flour Sand Beach, named for its strikingly soft, fine white sand, which is made up of coral.

After our visit of Cormorant Point we will continue with our yacht to the nearby Champion Islet, where we can enjoy some great snorkeling.

    DAY 4 | MONDAY | B.L.D.

Morning: Sullivan Bay at Santiago Island. Santiago, also called James, or San Salvador Island, is located in the west central part of the Galapagos archipelago. It is the fourth largest island in the island group (following Isabela, Fernandina, and Santa Cruz). Along with some of the large western volcanoes of Isabela and Fernandina, Santiago is also volcanically active, with many young flows and cones to be seen, particularly along the south, west, and east coasts. These may even be seen from the summit of Darwin Volcano and from space! A number of historic eruptions have been reported over the last two centuries. Santiago actually consists of two coalesced volcanoes: a typical shield volcano on the northwest end and a low, linear fissure volcano at the southeast end.

Afternoon: Bartolome Island. Bartolome is situated across Sullivan Bay. It has an altitude of 114 meters, from where we can observe many beautiful sights of the Galapagos Islands. Volcanic cones, lunar-like craters, lava fields, and the famous Toba formed pinnacle that was eroded by the sea can be seen here. There is very little vegetation on this island, but it does have two breathtaking beaches where marine turtles along with a very small colony of Galapagos penguins exist.

    DAY 5 | TUESDAY | Santa Cruz Island | Baltra Island Airport | Mainland Ecuador | B.

Morning: Black Turtle Cove at Santa Cruz Island. This little cove is located at the northern side of Santa Cruz Island. It is called a red mangrove lagoon and is extremely calm and quiet making it an ideal place as a nursery for baby sharks and rays. The crystal waters allow you an unobstructed examination of large groups of white-tip reef, black tipped and hammer head sharks, schools of golden rays and spotted eagle rays. Sea turtles are frequently seen and at times are found mating in the mangrove-lined waters. Pelicans and herons also inhabit this area. There are no landing sites so the visit is done by zodiac.

At the appropriate time, you will be transferred to the Baltra Island Airport (GPS) for your flight back to Guayaquil or Quito (airfare is NOT Included)

    * Please Note: Itinerary and activities are subject to change in case of force majeure caused by exceptional and natural circumstance

We begin our travels north of Quito, towards Otavalo, visiting the small village of Calderon, known for its unique and colorful ornamental ‘baked-bread’ dolls (figuras de masapán). We then continue along the Pan-American Highway to Guayllabamba to taste one of Ecuador’s endemic fruits (the chirimoya), stopping en route to admire the region’s beautiful landscape and snow-capped mountains, making a short stop at San Pablo Lake before arriving at Otavalo. Here we visit the busy textile market located at ‘Poncho Plaza’, famous as one of the largest open-air markets in South America. Find all kinds of handcrafts including tapestries made on old-Spanish weaving looms, and even older pre-Columbian back strap looms. Stop for Lunch at a Hacienda. Enjoy some free time to shop (and haggle) with the friendly Otavaleños. In the early afternoon we visit a colonial hacienda for lunch. We then head to the small artisan village of Cotacachi and return to Quito in the late afternoon/early evening.
