Day 6 | Exploring the Hidden Treasures of the Sacred Valley | B.L.

You will begin your trip visiting the archaeological vestiges of Maras and Moray. Maras is an impressive salt mine complex. These are huge salt deposits that were exchanged for other products from other parts of the empire. Moray’s archaeological vestiges are composed of mysterious concentric circular terraces which, according to some scholars, would be an agricultural research center. The higher external terraces would be at a higher temperature than the inner terraces and could simulate the different ecological strata of the empire. Lunch will be served at local restaurant and then continue the trip to the Ollantaytambo Park, stopping at various points of interest along the route. Ollantaytambo is a typical example of the urban planning of the Incas, whose residents still live in accordance with their old traditions. Pachacútec (1438-1471) conquered the town, destroyed it, and built a new one, absorbing it as part of his empire, and it is currently considered one of the most remarkable archaeological complexes of the Inca Empire. Then you will be transferred back to your hotel at Sacred Valley.

Day 7 | Exploring the Machu Picchu Citadel / Sacred Valley | B.L.

At coordinated time, pick up from your hotel and transfer to Ollanta Train Station. Ollantaytambo’s train station is located close to the site where the old Inca hanging bridge crossed the Urubamba. Move along the tracks following the river’s course into the jungle lowlands to Aguas Calientes also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is the last stop before getting to the famous archaeological complex. Find crafts, books, restaurants, and array of hotels in this buzzling town. The bus zig-zags up the steep side of the mountain for nearly 20 minutes. The pre-Hispanic engineering marvel unveils itself gradually; this was the site Inca Pachacutec chose as royal retreat and where his “malqui” or mummified remains were to be worshiped. Machu Picchu or “Old Mountain” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders yet the traveler senses a beauty unmatched by these or any other title. How such a work was accomplished Granite stone buildings that seem to naturally sprout from the earth instead of being constructed on it. Andean mountain aesthetics can truly be appreciated at Machu Picchu; explore the site at your own pace.

Visit the Royal Mausoleum or take the path to the Inca Bridge, or the central flight of steps to reach Intihuatana. Or simply contemplate the sacred geography all around; the Urubamba nearly encircling the site and Mount Salkantay (“Wild”), overlooking the citadel from the southeast. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. Later, board the train back to Ollantaytambo station.

Day 8 | Sacred Valley to Cusco – Afternoon Exploration of Cusco | B.

Breakfast at the hotel in the Sacred Valley followed by a private transfer to Cusco for an overnight stay at the selected hotel. In the afternoon, meet your local host and begin your Cusco City Tour and Sacsayhuaman, a half-day tour combining Sacsayhuaman and Cusco Historic Center and it will start visiting the Archaeological Park of Sacsayhuaman. The first stop will be at the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, a beautiful place that radiates peace and quiet, where we will be able to admire the huge rocks measuring up to 4 meters high that were used in its construction. We will then head for Q’enqo, the ancient temple of the Puma, where we will be able to appreciate an altar for sacrifices, and then will continue on to Tambomachay, the sacred fountains of life and health. On the way we will have a panoramic view from Puca Pucara, a watchtower that controlled the entrance to the city. After that we will visit the Temple of the Sun, known as Korikancha, on top of which the Saint Dominique Convent was built. A legend tells that his temple was entirely lined in gold sheets that marveled the Conquistadors upon their arrival. Finally, we will go to the Main Square and will visit the Cathedral that reassures invaluable colonial paintings and other works of art such as the Cross that arrived with the first conquistadors.

Important Note: People are not allowed to enter religious sites wearing shorts. Taking photos is not allowed inside the Cathedral.

In the afternoon, enjoy a fantastic Lima City Tour through Lima’s streets and plazas. Your tour will start at Larcomar, the city’s most exclusive shopping center located in front of the Pacific Ocean, and will transfer you to the Pucllana Temple, a pre-Inca pyramid found in the Miraflores district, to mark a contrast. You will the visit the El Olivar Park, an ancient olive plantation, which is now part of the city, located in the San Isidro district, and from there you will be transferred to Lima’s historical downtown, a World Heritage listed by UNESCO. You will stop at the Main Square, located in front of the Presidential Palace, the Lima Municipality and the Archbishop’s Palace, beautiful colonial buildings that are an important part of its identity. It contains the relics of the three Peruvian saints, Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martin de Porres and San Juan Macías, and a library with a collection of 25 thousand old books.
