Day by Day Itinerary: Grace Galapagos Deluxe Cruise Northern Islands

    DAY 1 | SATURDAY | Welcome to Baltra | L.D.

Upon arrival in Baltra, passengers are picked up at the airport by our naturalist guides and taken on a ten minute bus drive to the pier to board the M/Y Grace, for a 7-night cruise with daily explorations and other interesting activities in the following locations: Daphne Major Islet,  Santa Fe Island, South Plaza Island, Prince Phillip’s Steps and Darwin Bay on Tower Island (Genovesa), Punta Espinosa on Fernandina Island, Urbina Bay, Tagus Cove, Punta Vicente Roca or Punta Albemarle on Isabela Island. Espumilla Beach or Buccaneers’ Cove, and James Bay on Santiago Island, Charles Darwin Research Station, and the Wild Land Tortoises Reserve (Highlands) on Santa Cruz Island, and the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal Island.

Once on board the M/Y Grace the Deluxe or Premium Staterooms will be assigned, followed by an introductory briefing and lunch en route to our first visitor site: Daphne Major Islet.

We will circumnavigate Daphne Major Islet which is home to a variety of birds including Galapagos martins, blue footed boobies, Nazca boobies, short eared owls, red billed tropic birds amongst others. After these visits we get ready for our welcome cocktail and first briefing before continuing to dinner.

    DAY 2 | SUNDAY | B.L.D.

Santa Fe Island: In the morning, visit Santa Fe Island, home to one of the most beautiful and sheltered bays of the archipelago, and also some of the best snorkeling – with its crystal clear waters. It is certainly one of the best locations to spy sea turtles, swim with sea lions, and get a glimpse of the Galapagos white-tipped shark. After a wet landing you will walk up to a nearby cliff to see the land iguanas through an area of Opuntia Cactus.

South Plaza Island: In the afternoon we visit South Plaza Island and land iguanas wandering through bright red carpet weed. We will see swallow tailed gulls nesting around the overhang tops and red-billed tropicbirds, frigate birds and shearwaters flying with dancing displays.

Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Zodiac Rides.

    DAY 3 | MONDAY | B.L.D.

Prince Phillip’s Steps (Tower Island): In the morning, Prince Philip’s Steps, named for a visit by the British Monarch in 1964. The 25-meter (81-foot) stairway leads to a narrow stretch of land that opens out onto the plateau surrounding Darwin Bay and extends to form the north side of the island. Red-footed boobies wrap their webbed feet around branches to perch in the bushes while in contrast, their “Nazca booby” cousins dot the surface of the scrublands beyond. Crossing through the sparse vegetation you will come to a broad lava field that extends towards the sea; this forms the north shore. Storm petrels flutter out over the ocean in swarms, then return to nest in the cracks and tunnels of the lava field, where their predator, the short-eared owl, is a frequent visitor.

Darwin Bay (Tower Island): In the afternoon we visit Tower Island, possibly one of the most interesting Islands of the archipelago to visit on a Galapagos cruise! It could serve as a film set for a secret submarine base! The southwestern part of Tower Island is an ocean-filled caldera ringed by the outer edges of a sizeable and mostly submerged volcano. It is also known as “Bird Island,” a name it lives up to in a spectacular way. Landing on the white coral sands of Darwin Bay and walking up the beach, you will be surrounded by the bustling activity of great frigate birds.

Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Zodiac Rides.

    DAY 4 | TUESDAY | B.L.D.

Punta Espinosa (Fernandina Island): In the morning we visit Fernandina Island, home to La Cumbre volcano, which erupts frequently (most recently in May 2005). We visit Punta Espinosa, a narrow spit of land, where a number of unique species, such as marine iguanas, sea lions, flightless cormorants, and herons, egrets, and Galapagos hawks can be seen in close proximity.

Urbina Bay (Isabela Island): Afternoon visit to Urbina Bay, directly west of Isabela´s Volcano Alcedo, where we will make an easy, wet landing (a hop into a few inches of water). We walk on a stretch of three miles (5 km) of the marine reef that has been uplifted by as much as 13 feet (4 meters) out of the water. A highlight of this excursion is discovering the giant land iguanas and giant tortoises, as well as the opportunity to go snorkeling amongst marine creatures or just relaxing on shore.

    Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling.

    DAY 5 | WEDNESDAY | B.L.D.

Tagus Cove (Isabela Island): In the morning you will visit Tagus Cove on Isabela Island. A wooden stairway rises to the trail entrance and continues around Darwin Lake through a dry vegetation zone, and ends in a promontory formed by spatter cones. The site provides spectacular views of our anchorage in the bay, as well as Darwin and Wolf Volcanoes.

Punta Vicente Roca (Isabela Island): In the afternoon we head north to Punta Vicente Roca. Snorkeling is incredible here as a result of the nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current that bathe the western side of the archipelago. We will have a chance to see colorful fish, sea lions, penguins, and sea turtles in the water. This is also a great spot to take an interesting panga ride to spot wildlife along the shores and cliffs.

Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Zodiac Rides.

    DAY 6 | THURSDAY | B.L.D.

Espumilla Beach or Buccaneer’s Cove (Santiago Island): Morning visit to Chinese Hat Islet, a fairly recent volcanic cone; it has the shape of a down-facing Chinese hat. On the rocky shoreline of nearby Santiago, Galapagos penguins are often seen. There is a small sea lion cove on the north shore, where boats anchor and land at the visitor site. Late morning snorkeling with sea lions and penguins and swimming opportunities in the cove.

James Bay (Santiago Island): Afternoon visit to James Bay, where we land on a black beach with intriguing eroded rock formations. A trail leads to a series of crystal-clear grottos formed of broken lava tubes, which are home to sea lions, fur seals, marine iguanas, and tropical fish. You will be snorkeling in the late afternoon to one of the best sites on the islands to see Green Sea Turtles and Galapagos Penguins swimming.

Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Zodiac Rides.

    DAY 7 | FRIDAY | B.L.D.

Santa Cruz Island: Charles Darwin Research Station: Santa Cruz is the second largest island in the Galapagos and its capital, Puerto Ayora, is the economic center of the Islands. In the morning we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to visit the Giant Tortoise and Land Iguana Breeding and Rearing Program. Here we used to find Lonesome George (now deceased), the last of his particular race of tortoise.

Afternoon visit to the Santa Cruz Highlands, where the dry coastal vegetation transitions to lush wet fields and forests overgrown with moss and lichens. Our destination is the Tortoise Reserve, where we will have chances see these animals in the wild.

    Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks.

DAY 8 | SATURDAY | Interpretation Center (San Cristobal Island) / San Cristobal Airport | B.

Today our Galapagos cruise comes to an end, but before we bid farewell to the Grace and her crew, we pay a visit to the Interpretation Center, an excellent place to learn about Natural History in the Galapagos. The Museum of Natural History displays information on the volcanic origins of the islands, their remoteness from the continent, ocean currents, climate, the arrival of the different species and their colonization, among other points of interest. The human history is also showcased, chronologically narrating the most significant events related to the discovery and colonization of the islands.

    Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks

Next we are transferred to the airport for the local flight back to the mainland (airfare is not included) to connect with your outbound flight (airfare is not included).
