Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. At the appropriate time, meet your private guide for today’s adventure: A private visit of Antigua, the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, which was founded in the early 16th century. Built 1,500 mts. above sea-level, it was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 but its principal monuments are still preserved as ruins. It is also known as “La Antigua Guatemala.” UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
The city’s 16th-century Renaissance grid pattern and Baroque-style monumental buildings and ruins have survived along with cobblestone streets, plazas with fountains, and domestic architecture. Among the many significant historical buildings, the Palace of the Captains General, the Cathedral, Las Capuchinas, La Merced, Santa Clara, the Cultural Center La Azotea, where you can taste one cup of the best Guatemalan Coffee, and learn all about it. DAY 3 | THURSDAY OR SUNDAY | Witness Ancient Rituals in Chichicastenango and view the Open-air Market / Antigua to Lake Atitlan | B.L.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. At the appropriate time, meet your private guide for today’s adventure: A short ride to Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, a town in El Quiché, known for its traditional K’iche’ Maya culture. The Spanish conquistadors gave the town its name from the Nahuatl name used by their soldiers from Tlaxcala: Tzitzicaztenanco, or City of Nettles. Its original name was Chaviar.
In its famous open-air market is where vendors sell handicrafts, food, flowers, pottery, wooden boxes, condiments, medicinal plants, candles, pom and copal (traditional incense), cal (lime stones for preparing tortillas), grindstones, pigs and chickens, machetes, and other tools. Next to the market is the 400-year old church of Santo Tomás. It is built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, and the steps originally leading to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization remain venerated. K’iche’ Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year. Enjoy lunch at a local Inn.

DAY 4 | FRIDAY OR MONDAY | Lake crossing to Santiago de Atitlan / Atitlan to Guatemala City | B.L.
After your breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a scenic crossing across the Lake Atitlan. Of volcanic origin, the lake is the deepest in Central America. The cultures of the towns and villages surrounding Lake Atitlan are influenced by the Maya people.
Afterwards, visit one of the largest lakeside communities, Santiago de Atitlan. It is noted for its worship of Maximón, an idol formed by the fusion of traditional Mayan deities, Catholic saints, and conquistador legends. The village is famous for its Primitive Art Works, including some of the most beautiful Naïf Paintings. Browse around the many little shops and meet some of the local artists. Enjoy lunch in Santiago Atitlan before crossing back to Panajachel.

DAY 5 | SATURDAY OR TUESDAY | Exploring Guatemala City, Central America’s most beautiful urban area | B.
After your early breakfast, you will head out on a private guided excursion to get to know the city. Guatemala City was the scene of the declaration of independence of Central America from Spain, and became the capital of the United Provinces of Central America in 1821. It is the largest capital in the region and serves as the economic, governmental, and cultural epicenter of the country.
In the Historic Center, lying in the very heart of the city, you can see the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace of Culture), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Presidential House, the Plaza de la Constitución (old Central Park) and the Ixchel Museum. Balance of the day is at leisure to enjoy the city at your own pace.
DAY 6 | SUNDAY OR WEDNESDAY | Tikal Day Expedition | B.L.
After an early breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for a short flight to Flores Airport in the jungle of the Petén (airfare is included) for a day expedition of Tikal Archeological Park. Upon arrival meet your guide, who will escort you on a walking shared tour of one of the largest of the Classic period Maya cities in the Americas. Named by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, the architecture of the ancient city is built from limestone and includes the remains of temples that tower over 230 ft. high, large royal palaces, in addition to smaller pyramids, palaces, residences, administrative buildings, platforms and inscribed stone monuments.
Also enjoy the tropical forest, nesting place of hundreds of exotic birds and habitat of a wide variety of wildlife. Taste your lunch at a local Inn. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the Flores airport for your return flight to Guatemala City (airfare is included), upon arrival transfer to the hotel.
