    Day 4 | Discovering Cusco – Morning & Afternoon Private Excursions | B.

This morning, you will start the tour at the Sacsayhuamán fortress, one of the emblematic Inca constructions (located a few minutes away from the built-up area), built by Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century. It is a huge fortress made of very large stones, and the manner in which they were transported and cut is still a mystery. The Inti Raymi Festival, which worships the Sun, is reenacted on June 24 of each year, during the winter solstice. You will then go to Q’enqo, located four kilometers away from Cusco city, which is a mainly religious archaeological complex where it is believed that propitiatory agricultural rituals were carried out. You will continue to Puka Pukara, located seven kilometers away from Cusco. Puka Pukara, which means “red fortress”, has many rooms, squares, bathrooms, aqueducts, walls and towers, and are believed that the Inca’s entourage used it while he rested at Tambomachay. Next, you will explore the fountains of Tambomachay, a construction that has fine stone finishing and high command of hydraulic engineering, with aqueducts that continue supplying clear water to this place. This archaeological complex is located eight kilometers away from Cusco City. Also known as the “Inca bath”, Tambomachay was probably the leisure place for the Inca and his entourage. The construction seems to have a special interest in water, which it worshipped, and fine aqueducts fed on groundwater aquifers and neighboring hot springs. After the tour, you will return to the hotel.

This afternoon, you host will call for you at the hotel to begin your visit to the city of Cusco, You will start your tour with a visit to the Coricancha, also known as the “Temple of the Sun” or “Premises of the Gilded One”; the construction of which was ordered by Inca Pachacutec (1438-1471) and was used as base for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent upon the arrival of the Spaniards. This is when the Sun (Inti, in Quechua) was worshipped during the Inca Empire and at the time of the Incas, its walls were fully covered with gold sheets and its courtyards were planted with golden corn and life-size llamas. You will then go to the Cathedral, the most important building on the Main Square and one of the most splendid Spanish colonial churches in America, which is shaped as a Latin Cross and houses about 400 colonial paintings from the Cusco art school, and impressive goldsmith, silversmith and precious stones works. Its construction lasted almost a century; it started in 1560 and ended in 1654. The Ecclesiastical Chapter ordered to extract and transport hundreds of stones from the Sacsayhuaman fortress for this purpose.

Day 5 | From Cusco to the Sacred Valley / Urubamba Overnight | B.L.

During the morning, you are picked up from your hotel in Cusco to visit the town of Chinchero*, a traditional Cusco urban center located at an elevated point with a beautiful view of the valley. The inhabitants of this area preserve the artisan traditions and the inherited knowledge of the Incas and display them in their clothes and customs. In Chinchero there are also archaeological remains and a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru. Then, you are transferred to the Living Museum of Yucay. The museum is a center Andean traditions interpretations, where demonstrations of the elaboration of textile work, adobe, pottery and silverware are carried out in the same way in which they used to in antiquity; an original recreation of Inca traditions. Also, residents of the museum include llamas, sheep and alpacas, and they can be fed!  Transfer to Ollantaytambo where you have free time for lunch. After this, visit the town and local archaeological site, inhabited uninterruptedly since Inca times, and climb the iconic fortress, built next to a mountain. At the end of this activity, you are transferred back to your hotel. Overnight stay in the Sacred Valley at the hotel of your choice with breakfast included. * Visits on Sundays include a tour to the Chinchero market.

Day 6 | The Hidden Treasures of the Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu Overnight | B.L.D.

Our adventure takes us now to less explored treasures of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.  You will begin your trip visiting the archaeological vestiges of Maras and Moray. Maras is an impressive salt mine complex. These are huge salt deposits that were exchanged for other products from other parts of the empire. Moray’s archaeological vestiges are composed of mysterious concentric circular terraces which, according to some scholars, would be an agricultural research center. The higher external terraces would be at a higher temperature than the inner terraces and could simulate the different ecological strata of the empire. Enjoy a buffet lunch at local restaurant. Continue to the studio of Pablo and Marilu Seminario – artisans who have devoted 20 years to the study of Pre-Colombian pottery techniques and designs, incorporating these ancient traditions into their own beautiful works. Then, you will be transferred to Ollantaytambo train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes (remember to only take a small backpack with your overnight change of clothes as the train doesn’t have a luggage compartment. The rest of your luggage will be taken to your Cusco hotel where it will be stored until your return on day 7). Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by our staff who will assist you with check-in in your hotel in Aguas Calientes (now, Machu Picchu town) for an overnight stay with breakfast included. Enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 7 | Morning Exploration of Machu Picchu / Afternoon Train-Van to Cusco | B.L.

This morning take the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu for a guided visit. The pre-Hispanic engineering marvel unveils itself gradually; this was the site Inca Pachacutec chose as royal retreat and where his mummified remains were to be worshiped. Machu Picchu or “Old Mountain” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders yet the traveler senses a beauty unmatched by these or any other title. How was such a work accomplished? Granite stone buildings that seem to naturally sprout from the earth instead of being constructed on it. Andean mountain aesthetics can truly be appreciated at Machu Picchu; explore the site, visit the Royal Mausoleum or take the path to the Inca Bridge, or the central flight of steps to reach Intihuatana. Or simply contemplate the sacred geography all around; the Urubamba nearly encircling the site and Mount Salkantay (“Wild”), overlooking the citadel from the southeast. Enjoy buffet lunch at Machu Picchu Belmond Sanctuary Lodge’s restaurant. Later, take the train back to Ollantaytambo station. A transportation service will pick you up from the train station at the established time and will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco City for an overnight at the hotel of your choice with breakfast included.
