We will then head for Q’enqo, the ancient temple of the Puma, where we will be able to appreciate the sacrifices altar in the inner part of an enormous carved rock. History says that this temple was entirely lined in gold sheets when the Spanish conquistadors arrived. At the end of our tour, we will go to the Main Square and will visit the Cathedral where invaluable colonial paintings and other works of art, such as the Cross that, arrived with the first conquistadors can be admired.

    Day 4 | Cusco / Day Trip to Machu Picchu / Cusco | B.L.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. During the journey, we will appreciate several landmarks in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including the hanging bridge that signals the start of the Inca Trail. The railway follows the course of the Urubamba River, also known as Vilcanota River, climbing down and entering a canyon until we reach Aguas Calientes; the town that is located at the foot of the Machu Picchu Mountain.

After getting off the train, we will board the mini-bus that will take us up the winding road to Machu Picchu; the Sacred Citadel of the Incas and considered one of the New Wonders of the World. The Lost City of the Incas will astonish us with its terraces, ceremonial shrines, steps and urban areas. Energy will be all around us. After a well-paced guided visit, we will have lunch at one of the restaurants in the area and then will be ready to return to Cusco by train / van. Arrival and transfer to the hotel.

    Day 5 | Cusco / Puerto Maldonado: the Peruvian Amazon | B.L.D.

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado (airfare is not included). The employees of the lodge will pick you up from the airport and will transfer you to the fluvial port to reach Posada Amazónica Jungle Lodge after a two-hour trip by boat. You can see a great diversity of birds while you tour the Madre de Dios River and have lunch. The Madre de Dios River flows along 1150 kilometers, crossing most of the national Manu and Tambopata national reserves, until Bolivia. The Tambopata National Reserve, which has an area of one million and a half hectares, has been the subject of several TV documentaries due to its exuberant flora and fauna, which makes it a unique land in the world. After arriving at the lodge and getting installed in your bungalow, you will take a short tour to get acquainted with the area that surrounds the lodge. You will have dinner after dusk and will go to rest to make the most out of the next day. Accommodation at Posada Amazonas lodge for three-nights including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

    Day 6 | Exploring the Amazon | B.L.D.

After breakfast, you will board a motor boat for a fifteen minutes ride to Lake Tres Chimbadas; there, you will take a canoe trip around its shores, to have a close look at the fauna that populates it. The most outstanding animals are giant otters, turtles and shanshos, a bird with a prehistoric appearance. Unlike rivers, lakes attract a different diversity of animals, as there is no need to fight the current and it represents safe, calm water for marine, terrestrial and flying animals. You will then return to the lodge to have lunch and subsequently tour the neighboring paths. This will enable you to watch a great variety of insects and – if you are lucky – vipers, deer and other larger animals from a very short distance. You will take a nighttime tour after dinner to watch a variety of animals that only leave their lairs at night.

    Day 7 | Exploring the Amazon | B.L.D.

After having breakfast, you will take a short hike to a nearby collpa. Collpas are clay deposits that the parrots and macaws visit in large quantities to eat this substance, as it helps them to clean their stomachs. After watching hundreds of birds fluttering around in front of you, you will return to the lodge to have lunch, and you will take a hike in the afternoon through a primary forest accompanied by a naturalist guide.

    Day 8 | Puerto Maldonado / Lima | B.

Today we retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, our office and the airport; depending on your flight schedule, this may require dawn departures. Fly to Lima (airfare is not included). Upon your arrival in Lima, check-in for your onward flight.
