Easter Island, Chile: Moai Route: Discover Anakena Beach and the Lost Culture of Rapa Nui. We will depart from our hotel on Easter Island and head east to visit Ahu Vaihu and Akahanga, ancient temples built on stone platforms known as Ahu. Here, you will see Moai, the enormous monolithic statues carved from volcanic stone, along with Pukao, the stone topknots that were once placed on top of some Moai.
Our journey continues to Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater formed from compacted ash that also contains a small lagoon. This volcano holds great historical importance, as it was the primary quarry where the Moai were carved. Today, 397 of these impressive statues remain on its slopes.
Next, we will visit Ahu Tongariki, the most remarkable ceremonial platform on the island. It features 15 massive Moai lined up facing inland. Nearby is Te Pito Kura, the site of the tallest Moai ever erected on an Ahu. Known as Moai Paro, it stands 10 meters tall and weighs approximately 85 tons. Close to this site is a large spherical stone called Te Pito o Te Henua, which is believed to represent the navel of the world.
We will end the day at Anakena, the island’s most popular beach. In addition to its natural beauty, Anakena is notable for the row of Moai that stand with their backs to the sea. It offers a unique and peaceful landscape to enjoy before we return to our hotel. A box lunch is included.
