This comprehensive 4-night itinerary aboard the catamaran M/C Archipel I circles the largest island, Isabela, exploring the untouched western end of the Galapagos, a region recently formed by volcanic activity. Read More
Nutrient-rich ocean upwellings attract a diverse array of marine and birdlife, making this remote and less-frequented area a natural spectacle. Although reaching this region requires longer navigation, mainly overnight, the stable M/C Archipel I ensures a comfortable journey. This allows you to witness the survival of the fittest without experiencing its hardships.
Highlights of the trip include discovering bizarre animal species on the pristine Fernandina Island and the isolated west coast of Isabela. You will trek across solidified lava flows to reach stunning lagoons and mangroves, encounter the flightless cormorant known as the holy grail of evolution, and snorkel in tidal channels alongside whitetip reef sharks, rays, and the world’s only tropical penguin.

In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you will pass through an inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. You will also be required to pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of 200 dollars, unless it has been prepaid. A guide will meet you, assist with your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center: Santa Cruz
At this site, you can observe tortoises from various islands in the archipelago. They participate in a captive breeding program and are later returned to repopulate areas where their populations have declined. The land iguanas of Santa Cruz, Isabela, and North Seymour are also part of a captive breeding program, as their populations suffered due to feral dogs.
One of the main attractions is the famous embalmed Lonesome George. Estimated to have died between 93 and 109 years old, he is recognized as the last of his kind and a symbol of the conservation efforts to protect endangered species. The captive tortoises are accustomed to visitors, making this a great place to take photos with them.
AM: Moreno Point: Isabela
Moreno Point is located on the north coast of Isabela Island, between the volcanoes Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul. The trail follows a solidified pahoehoe lava flow leading to a complex of coastal lagoons. Its main attractions are the various bird species found around the lakes and mangroves.
PM: Urbina Bay: Isabela
Urbina Bay is located along the west coast of Isabela, between Elizabeth Bay and Tagus Cove, near the base of the Alcedo Volcano. The coastline experienced a major uplift in 1954, causing the shore to expand three quarters of a mile outward. Here, you can find corals, shells, and many other calcareous organisms exposed above the water. Urbina Bay is home to large and colorful land iguanas as well as giant tortoises from the Alcedo Volcano population. Many Darwin finches can also be seen in the area.
AM: Espinoza Point: Fernandina
Fernandina is the third-largest island in the archipelago and has a single visitor site: Punta Espinoza, located at the northeastern tip of the island. Marine iguanas gather here in larger groups than on any other island. They bask on the sand, swim near the shore, and sometimes block the way at the landing dock. Among the unique species found here is the flightless cormorant. This bird has adapted its survival strategies and perfected its skills for finding food in the ocean. Its wings, tail, and feet have progressively evolved for swimming. Seeing these birds is witnessing evolution happening right before your eyes.
PM: Vicente Roca Point: Isabela
While having lunch, we will cross the Bolivar Channel for the last time to Vicente Roca Point, located at the mouth of Isabela’s seahorse shape. As you enter a dark cave beneath a spectacular arch, the roaring echoes of the waves will accompany you. Just around the corner, the collapsed amphitheatre of Volcano Ecuador offers another impressive view. The calmer waters of the coves are well protected from the ocean swell and are fairly cold, but an excellent place for snorkeling among various species of sharks, penguins, pufferfish, and even seahorses.
AM: Egas Port: Santiago
Egas Port is a black sand beach located on the west side of Santiago Island. Volcanic tuff deposits contributed to the formation of this unique beach, which is the island’s main attraction. The site is named Puerto Egas after Hector Egas, who attempted to start salt extraction here, but the effort failed. The price of salt on the mainland was very low, making exploitation in the Galapagos uneconomical. As a result, the project was abandoned, leaving behind its infrastructure.
PM: Rabida
Rabida Island is unique because of the red color of its rocks and sand. The volcanic material on the island is very porous, and external factors such as rain, saltwater, and sea breeze have acted as oxidizing agents. A short walk along a trail leads to a coastal lagoon behind the beach, where you can observe land birds such as finches, doves, yellow warblers, and mockingbirds. There is also a colony of flamingos at the lagoon.
AM: Black Turtle Cove: Santa Cruz
After breakfast, you will check out and disembark from the cruise for the last time at 8:30 am. Your final adventure is brief but enchanting and will take place en route to the airport. Onboard the dinghy, you will explore the green landscape of Black Turtle Cove, which is mostly composed of mangrove trees that provide habitat for countless aerial and aquatic species. Observe how the calm emerald lagoon and surrounding shallow bays make it easy to spot sea turtles as well as groups of sharks.
The visit ends with your disembarkation at 9:00 am on Baltra Island, ultimately reaching Baltra Airport at 9:30 am, marking the official end of your cruise adventure.
