The M/C Archipel I Itinerary B5 offers a classic 4-night southeastern route through the oldest islands of the Galapagos, where evolution has had ample time to shape a variety of unique subspecies. Read More
These emblematic creatures vary from island to island, making each stop a new discovery. Cruising along coasts enriched by the nutrient-laden Humboldt Current, you will witness an extraordinary abundance of life, especially during your snorkeling excursions. One of the most meaningful moments of the journey is at Pitt Point, where you will disembark on the same green-sand bay that Charles Darwin visited in 1835, connecting you directly with the origins of his scientific inspiration.
Highlights of this itinerary include snorkeling alongside playful sea lions and colorful reef fish at Lobos Islet and the shores of Floreana. You will also have the chance to send a postcard from the historic barrel at Post Office Bay, a tradition that dates back centuries. At Pitt Point, the easternmost site in the archipelago, you will encounter dramatic cliffs overflown by several distinct species of boobies. The journey concludes at Española Island, one of the most breathtaking stops, where you will make unforgettable memories surrounded by spectacular scenery and unique wildlife.

In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you will pass through an inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. You will also be required to pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of 200 dollars, unless it has been prepaid. A guide will meet you, assist with your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center: Santa Cruz
At this site, you can observe tortoises from various islands in the archipelago. They participate in a captive breeding program and are later returned to repopulate areas where their populations have declined. The land iguanas of Santa Cruz, Isabela, and North Seymour are also part of a captive breeding program, as their populations suffered due to feral dogs.
One of the main attractions is the famous embalmed Lonesome George. Estimated to have died between 93 and 109 years old, he is recognized as the last of his kind and a symbol of the conservation efforts to protect endangered species. The captive tortoises are accustomed to visitors, making this a great place to take photos with them.
AM: Cormorant Point and Devil’s Crown: Floreana
Cormorant Point, at the northern tip of Floreana Island, features unique green and white sand beaches formed by volcanic activity and coral erosion, and is home to sea lions, stingrays, and nesting Pacific green turtles. Nearby, Devil’s Crown offers one of the best snorkeling spots in the Galapagos, where visitors can see diverse marine life including penguins, sea turtles, and dolphins, though the strong currents may challenge less experienced swimmers.
PM: Post Office Bay and Baroness Lookout: Floreana
This historic site features a wooden barrel placed in the 18th century by whalers, which served as an informal mail system and is still used by tourists today. Visitors can enjoy wildlife on the beach, including sea lions, turtles, rays, and the only colony of Galapagos penguins in the southeastern islands. The nearby Baroness Lookout offers panoramic views and was once favored by Floreana’s eccentric early settler, Eloisa von Wagner.
AM: Osborn Islet and Gardner Bay: Española
The striking white beach at Gardner Bay is an important breeding site for Pacific green turtles. However, its main attraction is the Galapagos sea lion colony. Females remain in this natural nursery year-round, nursing their pups until they are three years old, although the pups begin fishing at just five months. During the breeding and mating season, the colony grows even larger.
PM: Suarez Point: Española
Huge ocean waves crash against the southern basaltic cliffs of Suarez Point, creating a spectacular blowhole that sends water spraying several meters into the air. The height of the spray depends on the season, tide, and strength of the sea breeze. Take a moment to pause in silence at this iconic viewpoint, and turn this unforgettable experience into a lasting memory.
AM: Pitt Point
Two wind-sculpted tuff cones at Pitt Point mark the extreme eastern end of San Cristobal and the entire archipelago. These cliffs were the first sight of land for HMS Beagle and Charles Darwin when they arrived on September 15, 1835. On the small green sand beach below, you will be greeted by a group of barking Galapagos sea lions. This is a bachelor colony where males usually rest and prepare for fighting and mating.
PM: Witch Hill
The primary attraction at this site is the coral sand beach, an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling. Witch Hill, the remains of a tuff cone, was one of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin. The impressive landscape often hosts coastal and migratory birds, including pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas. At times, the lagoon dries completely, leaving salt deposits on the bottom. The people of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno once used the lagoon as a salt mine.
AM: Lobos Islet
The beach at Lobos Islet harbours a colony of Galapagos sea lions. As in other colonies across the archipelago, you can approach nurturing females within just a few metres. During the breeding season, territorial males visit to defend and mate with the harem on their part of the beach. This low islet is home to more than just sea lions. Two other emblematic species breed here: male blue-footed boobies and great frigatebirds, which try to impress females (and tourists) with clumsy dances, waving their striking blue feet or inflating their balloon-sized scarlet throat pouches. During the breeding season, fluffy, hungry chicks cry for food and, once their wings are strong enough, they learn to fly.
After this visit, with assistance from the naturalist guide and crew members, you will be taken to San Cristobal airport.
