In San Cristobal
AM: Arrival at San Cristobal airport
Upon arrival at San Cristobal Airport, you will pass through an inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. You will also be required to pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of $200, unless it has been prepaid. A guide will meet you, assist with your luggage, and accompany you on a short bus ride to the harbor.
PM: Interpretation Centre and Frigatebird Hill: San Cristobal
The Interpretation Center, located just outside the provincial capital of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, offers an excellent introduction to the unique Galapagos archipelago. Its engaging and comprehensive exhibits provide a clear overview of the islands and explain what makes them so extraordinary. Informative panels in both English and Spanish, along with photos, documents, models, and life-like dioramas, present the history, ecology, and ongoing conservation efforts of the islands in an accessible and visually compelling way.
A short but often hot uphill trail with steps leads from the Interpretation Center to the summit of Frigatebird Hill. Along the way, four panoramic viewpoints offer sweeping views of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and the bays on both sides of the headland. On clear days, you can even spot the distant offshore formation of Kicker Rock. These wooded hilltops are among the few places where magnificent and great frigatebirds nest together in a mixed breeding colony.
AM: Santa Fe
Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, Santa Fe Island was formed by tectonic uplift rather than volcanic activity, which accounts for its relatively flat landscape. Some theories suggest that it may be the oldest island in the archipelago. Santa Fe is home to several endemic species, including the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land iguanas found in the islands. After disembarking in the island’s beautiful, clear waters, you will encounter one of its many sea lion colonies. Along the trail, you can observe salt bushes and giant prickly pear cacti, which are examples of the island gigantism common on remote oceanic islands.
PM: South Plaza
South Plaza is located to the east of Santa Cruz Island and forms part of a pair of islands known as Islas Plazas. Despite its small size, it is home to some of the most fascinating and unique species in the Galapagos. The land iguanas on South Plaza are smaller than those found on other islands. The island also hosts several hybrid iguanas, the result of crossbreeding between marine and land iguanas. These hybrids are easily recognizable by their black or grey coloration, the crest of a land iguana, and the facial features and tail of a marine iguana. The large iguana population is supported by an abundance of prickly pear cacti, their preferred food. Along the rugged cliffs, swallow-tailed gulls nest alongside other seabirds such as Audubon shearwaters, red-billed tropicbirds, frigatebirds, and brown pelicans.
AM: North Seymour
Seymour is an uplifted island (rather than volcanic) and is therefore relatively flat and scattered with boulders. It provides excellent nesting sites for a large population of magnificent frigatebirds. Blue-footed boobies can be seen performing their courtship dances in the open areas, while swallow-tailed gulls perch along the cliff edges. Despite the powerful surf that often pounds the outer shore, sea lions haul out onto the beach and can sometimes be seen bodysurfing in the waves.
PM: Chinese Hat
Chinese Hat is a 52-meter (170-foot) high volcanic cone that forms a small islet just off the rocky coast of Santiago Island. A small colony of Galapagos penguins has settled here. Approaching Chinese Hat from the north, it becomes clear how the islet got its name. This is an excellent place to learn about volcanic features such as lava bombs and lava tunnels. Visitors will arrive just in time to witness how this seemingly barren islet is gradually being colonized by pioneer species. Beautiful white coral sand beaches and holes in the eroding lava fields fill with lava sand, allowing plants to take root. Galapagos sea lions and numerous marine iguanas help fertilize the area, creating favorable conditions for hardy newcomers like saltbush and the sesuvium carpet.
AM: Twin Craters and El Chato Reserve: Santa Cruz
The native Scalesia forest of El Chato Tortoise Reserve is the best place to observe Galapagos giant tortoises in their most authentic setting. While the breeding centers guarantee sightings of tortoises in their corrals, nothing compares to seeing them in the wild. Though the area can be moist and muddy, your visit may become an adventurous quest, especially when the tortoises quietly leave their favorite pond.
The Twin Craters, located on either side of the road leading to Puerto Ayora, are impressive geological formations. These are not true volcanic craters but were formed by magma domes that hardened on the outside while lava continued flowing inside. This process left large empty magma chambers that eventually collapsed, creating two large holes. The craters lie within a lush Scalesia cloud forest, a high-altitude plant species endemic to the Galapagos. This area is also home to the carpenter finch, known for using tools to find food, and you may also spot the vermilion flycatcher, a small red-breasted bird.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre: Santa Cruz
At this site, you can observe tortoises originating from various islands of the archipelago. They participate in the captive breeding program and are later released to help repopulate areas where their numbers have declined. The land iguanas of Santa Cruz, Isabela, and North Seymour are also part of a captive breeding program, as their populations have been threatened by feral dogs.
One of the main attractions is the famous embalmed Lonesome George, estimated to have died between 93 and 109 years old. He is recognized as the last of his kind and a powerful symbol of conservation efforts for endangered species. The captive tortoises are accustomed to visitors, making this an excellent spot for photos
AM: Moreno Point: Isabela
Moreno Point is located on the north coast of Isabela Island, between the volcanoes Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul. The trail follows a solidified pahoehoe lava flow leading to a complex of coastal lagoons. Its main attractions are the various bird species that inhabit the lakes and surrounding mangroves.
PM: Urbina Bay: Isabela
Urbina Bay is located along the west coast of Isabela Island, between Elizabeth Bay and Tagus Cove, near the base of Alcedo Volcano. In 1954, a major geological uplift caused the shoreline to expand about three quarters of a mile outward. Here, you can find corals, shells, and many other calcareous organisms exposed above the water. Urbina Bay is home to large and colorful land iguanas as well as giant tortoises from the Alcedo Volcano population. Many Darwin finches can also be seen in the area.
AM: Espinoza Point: Fernandina
Fernandina is the third-largest island in the archipelago and has a single visitor site: Punta Espinoza, located at the northeastern tip of the island. Marine iguanas gather here in larger groups than on any other island. They bask on the sand, swim near the shore, and sometimes block the way at the landing dock. Among the unique species found here is the flightless cormorant. This bird has adapted its way of survival by perfecting its skills for finding food in the ocean. Its wings, tail, and feet have progressively evolved for swimming. Seeing these birds is like witnessing evolution happening right before your eyes.
PM: Vicente Roca Point: Isabela
While having lunch, we will cross the Bolivar Channel for the last time to Vicente Roca Point, located at the mouth of Isabela’s seahorse-shaped coastline. As you enter a dark cave beneath a spectacular arch, the roaring echoes of the waves will accompany you. Just around the corner, the collapsed amphitheater of Volcan Ecuador offers another impressive view. The calmer waters of the coves are well protected from the ocean swell and, although fairly cold, provide an excellent spot for snorkeling among various species, including sharks, penguins, pufferfish, and even seahorses.
AM: Egas Port: Santiago
Puerto Egas is a black sand beach located on the west side of Santiago Island. The beach’s unique black sand is formed from volcanic tuff deposits, making it one of the island’s main attractions. The site is named after Hector Egas, who once attempted to exploit salt here. However, the project failed because salt prices on the mainland were too low to justify its extraction in the Galapagos. As a result, the project was abandoned, and the infrastructure was left behind.
PM: Rabida
Rabida Island is unique for the striking red color of its rocks and sand. The volcanic material here is very porous, and external factors such as rain, saltwater, and sea breeze have acted as oxidizing agents, creating the island’s distinctive hue. A short walk along a trail leads to a coastal lagoon behind the beach, where you can observe land birds such as finches, doves, yellow warblers, and mockingbirds. The lagoon is also home to a colony of flamingos.
AM: Black Turtle Cove: Santa Cruz
After breakfast, you will check out and disembark from the cruise for the last time at 8:30 am.
Your final adventure is brief but enchanting and takes place en route to the airport. Aboard a dinghy, you will explore the lush landscape of Black Turtle Cove, mostly composed of mangrove trees that provide habitat for countless aerial and aquatic species. Observe the calm emerald lagoon and surrounding shallow bays, which make it easy to spot sea turtles as well as groups of sharks.
The visit concludes with disembarkation at 9:00 am on Baltra Island, followed by a transfer to Baltra Airport at 9:30 am, marking the official end of your cruise adventure.
