In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you will pass through an inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. You will also be required to pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of 200 dollars, unless it has been prepaid. A guide will meet you, assist with your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor.
PM: Bachas: Santa Cruz
Around noon, you will board the Archipel cruise from Baltra Airport. Once on board, your cabins will be assigned and lunch will be promptly served. Your first excursion begins in the afternoon, after 2:00 PM, with a visit to Bachas Beach. This is a beautiful bay with soft, white coral sand, often visited by sea turtles nesting their eggs. Please watch your step. After some leisure time on the beach, you may explore a small lagoon hidden behind the coastal vegetation, where you might spot flamingos, black necked stilts, and whimbrels. You may also notice a few rusty barges left behind after World War II, when the United States used the island as a strategic base to protect the Panama Canal. After approximately two hours, you will return on board.
AM: Prince Philip’s Steps: Genovesa
Before landing, you will take a dinghy ride along the eastern arm of the caldera. As you approach, the towering 25 meter (80 foot) cliffs become truly impressive. You may spot a Galapagos fur seal resting or a seabird nesting on one of the ledges near the base. Upon arrival, you will begin a hike, climbing a steep staircase from the landing dock up to a thicket of palo santo shrubs. Red footed boobies often nest in these scarce trees, avoiding the rocky ground below. At the edge of the rim, the vegetation clears, revealing sweeping panoramic views, a refreshing sea breeze, and the spectacular aerial displays of countless seabirds. Continuing along the exposed rim, you will pass colonies of Nazca boobies before reaching an area densely populated by nesting storm petrels. If you are lucky, you may even spot a well camouflaged short eared owl hunting among them.
PM: Darwin Bay: Genovesa
Inside the submerged caldera of Genovesa lies Darwin Bay, which measures over 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) in diameter and is nearly 200 meters (650 feet) deep. This compact area offers many surprises as you walk along a coral sand beach, cross barren lava formations and creeks, pass tidal pools and shrubs, and follow the tops of cliffs. In this peaceful environment, every species has carved out its own ecological niche, living in harmony without disturbing others.
AM: Bartholomew
The beautiful volcanic islet of Bartholomew is among the youngest islands and, on a geological scale, was born relatively recently from fire. Although it may seem lifeless at first glance, Bartholomew offers some of the wildest landscapes and most breathtaking panoramas in the entire archipelago. To enjoy the postcard-perfect view of the idyllic Pinnacle Bay, you will climb the stairs to the viewpoint at the top of the island (114 meters / 375 feet). Here, you enter a dramatic world of extinct spatter cones, craters, and lightweight lava droplets spewed out by fiery fountains. The summit trail is also perfect for observing how sparse pioneer vegetation, such as lava cactus, struggles to take root in the bare, virgin lava fields.
PM: Sullivan Bay: Santiago
Arriving at Sullivan Bay feels like landing on the moon. The desolate, expansive lava fields appear mostly lifeless at first. Yet this stark landscape, which is especially popular among photographers, offers surprising moments of life and beauty. Green sea turtles often burrow in the small white sand beach, where you may also spot crabs, blue herons, and oystercatchers.
AM: Twin Craters and El Chato Reserve: Santa Cruz
The native Scalesia forest of El Chato Tortoise Reserve is the best place to observe Galapagos giant tortoises in their most authentic setting. While the breeding centers guarantee sightings of tortoises in their corrals, nothing compares to seeing them in the wild. Though the area can be moist and muddy, your visit may become an adventurous quest, especially when the tortoises quietly leave their favorite pond.
The Twin Craters, located on either side of the road leading to Puerto Ayora, are impressive geological formations. These are not true volcanic craters but were formed by magma domes that hardened on the outside while lava continued flowing inside. This process left large empty magma chambers that eventually collapsed, creating two large holes. The craters lie within a lush Scalesia cloud forest, a high-altitude plant species endemic to the Galapagos. This area is also home to the carpenter finch, known for using tools to find food, and you may also spot the vermilion flycatcher, a small red-breasted bird.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre: Santa Cruz
At this site, you can observe giant tortoises from various islands of the archipelago. These tortoises are part of a captive breeding program aimed at repopulating areas where their populations have declined. Land iguanas from Santa Cruz, Isabela, and North Seymour are also included in similar efforts, as their numbers were severely impacted by the presence of feral dogs.
One of the main attractions is the embalmed Lonesome George, estimated to have died at between 93 and 109 years old. He is recognized as the last of his species and has become a powerful symbol of conservation efforts in the Galapagos. The tortoises in the breeding program are accustomed to human presence, making this a great opportunity for close-up observation and photography.
AM: Cormorant Point and Devil’s Crown: Floreana
Cormorant Point, at the northern tip of Floreana Island, features unique green and white sand beaches shaped by volcanic and marine activity. Visitors can encounter Galapagos sea lions, stingrays, and, during nesting season, Pacific green turtles. Nearby, Devil’s Crown offers exceptional snorkeling over a coral reef teeming with sea turtles, penguins, sea lions, colorful fish, and occasionally dolphins. Due to strong currents, it is best suited for experienced swimmers.
PM: – Post Office Bay and Baroness Lookout: Floreana
Post Office Bay on Floreana Island is famous for its historic 18th-century barrel mailbox, once used by sailors and still functioning today through a unique honor system. Visitors can relax on the beach alongside sea lions, green turtles, golden rays, and the archipelago’s only southeastern colony of penguins. A short hike to the Baroness Lookout offers panoramic coastal views and insight into Floreana’s colorful human history.
AM: Osborn Islet and Gardner Bay: Española
The striking white beach at Gardner Bay is an important breeding site for Pacific green turtles. However, its main attraction is the Galapagos sea lion colony. Females remain in this nursery year round, nursing their pups until they are three years old, although the pups begin fishing at just five months. During the breeding and mating season, the colony grows even larger.
PM: Suarez Point: Española
Huge ocean waves crash against the southern basaltic cliffs of Suarez Point, creating a spectacular blowhole that sends water shooting meters into the air, depending on the season, tide, and strength of the sea breeze. Take a moment to pause in silence at this iconic viewpoint and turn the experience into a lasting memory.
AM: Pitt Point: San Cristobal
Two wind-sculpted tuff cones at Pitt Point mark the extreme eastern end of San Cristobal and of the entire archipelago. These cliffs were the first sight of land when HMS Beagle and Charles Darwin arrived on September 15, 1835. On the small green sand beach below, you will be greeted by a group of barking Galapagos sea lions. This is a bachelor colony where males typically relax and prepare for fighting and mating.
PM: Witch Hill: San Cristobal
The primary attraction of this site is the coral sand beach, an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling. Witch Hill, the remains of a tuff cone, was one of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin. It boasts an impressive landscape where coastal and migratory birds such as pelicans, blue-footed boobies and swallow-tailed gulls are often seen, along with sea lions and marine iguanas. At times, the lagoon dries up completely, leaving deposits of salt on the bottom. The people of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno once used the lagoon as a salt mine.
AM: Lobos Islet: San Cristobal
The beach at Lobos Islet harbors a colony of Galapagos sea lions. As in other colonies across the archipelago, you can approach nursing females within a few meters. During the breeding season, territorial males visit the colony to defend and mate with the harem on their part of the beach. This low islet is home to more than just sea lions. Two other emblematic species breed here: male blue-footed boobies and great frigatebirds, who try to impress females (and tourists) with clumsy dances, showing off their striking blue feet or inflating their balloon-sized scarlet pouches. During the breeding season, fluffy, hungry chicks cry for food, and when their wings are strong enough, they learn to fly. After this, assisted by the naturalist guide and some crew members, you will be taken to San Cristobal airport.
