The Footsteps Back in Time itinerary aboard the M/V Evolution is an 8-day Galapagos cruise exploring iconic sites across San Cristobal, South Plaza, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Genovesa, North Seymour, Santa Fe, and Floreana. Highlights include snorkeling at marine-rich shores, hiking volcanic landscapes, observing unique wildlife like frigatebirds and land iguanas, and visits to historic and conservation sites such as Post Office Bay and the Charles Darwin Research Station. The journey ends with a scenic panga ride through Black Turtle Cove before departing from Baltra.
Once on board the M/V Evolution, enjoy lunch and a brief orientation as we sail to our first destination, Isla Lobos. As the name suggests, this small island is home to a lively colony of sea lions known for their playful behavior and loud calls. Located just north of San Cristobal, Isla Lobos sits within a sheltered lagoon, perfect for your first snorkeling experience alongside these curious marine mammals. From this spot, we will also have panoramic views of Kicker Rock, a striking volcanic formation that rises 152 meters (500 feet) above the sea, resembling a sleeping lion or, from another angle, a monumental split rock.
After the excursion, you will have time to freshen up before enjoying a welcome cocktail, a formal briefing, and dinner.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, zodiac rides
AM: South Plaza Island
In the morning, we visit South Plaza Island—one of the smallest yet most vibrant islands in the Galapagos. Yellow land iguanas roam through a striking landscape of bright red carpetweed, waiting for prickly pear fruit to fall from the cactus above. Orange Sally Lightfoot crabs scatter across blackened lava near the landing site, all framed by the surrounding turquoise waters. Along the cliffs, you’ll see swallow-tailed gulls nesting, while red-billed tropicbirds, frigatebirds, and shearwaters perform aerial displays. Blue-footed boobies can also be spotted perched along the cliff edges.
PM: Punta Carrion / Mosquera Island: Santa Cruz Island
We snorkel at Punta Carrion, followed by a visit to Mosquera Islet. Although Mosquera is little more than a sandy stretch between two lava outcrops, it is home to a lively colony of sea lions and offers excellent wildlife viewing.
Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Kayaking, Zodiac Rides.
AM: Chinese Hat Islet
This morning, we visit Chinese Hat Islet, a relatively young volcanic cone named for its resemblance to a traditional Chinese hat. Along the rocky shoreline of nearby Santiago Island, Galapagos penguins are frequently spotted. A small cove on the north shore serves as a landing site and is home to a colony of sea lions. Late morning activities include snorkeling in the cove, with opportunities to swim alongside playful sea lions and curious penguins.
PM: Santiago Island – James Bay
In the afternoon, we explore James Bay, landing on a striking black sand beach shaped by volcanic activity. A scenic trail leads to a series of crystal-clear grottos, formed from collapsed lava tubes. These pools are a haven for sea lions, fur seals, marine iguanas, and an array of tropical fish.
Activities: Hiking/Nature Walks, Snorkeling, Zodiac Rides.
AM: Darwin Bay: Genovesa Island
Tower Island could easily serve as the backdrop for a secret submarine base. The southwestern part of the island forms an ocean-filled caldera, ringed by the outer rim of a large, mostly submerged volcano. Located in the remote northwestern corner of the Galapagos, Genovesa is also known as Bird Island, a name it lives up to in spectacular fashion with an abundance of seabirds nesting in its cliffs and vegetation.
PM: Prince Philip’s Steps
Across the bay lies Prince Philip’s Steps, named after the British royal visit in 1964. The steps form a 25 meter (82 foot) staircase carved into the cliffside, leading up to a plateau that surrounds Darwin Bay and stretches across the island’s northern expanse. Here, red-footed boobies perch in the low bushes, wrapping their bright webbed feet around branches. As the sun sets, you may even catch a glimpse of giant manta rays gliding through the calm waters of the inner bay.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, kayaking, and Zodiac rides.
AM: North Seymour Island
Visit North Seymour Island, teeming with wildlife. Low cliffs along the shoreline are home to swallow-tailed gulls. A small forest of silver-grey Palo Santo trees stands just above the landing site, where a trail leads to sightings of sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, and land iguanas.
PM: Santa Fe Island
Visit Santa Fe Island, known for one of the most beautiful and sheltered bays in the archipelago and excellent snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. It is one of the best places to observe sea turtles, swim with sea lions, and glimpse the Galapagos white-tipped shark. After a wet landing, you will hike up to a nearby cliff to observe land iguanas among an area of Opuntia cactus.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, kayaking, and Zodiac rides.
AM: Post Office Bay: Floreana Island
Floreana has a colorful history filled with pirates, whalers, convicts, and a small group of eccentric colonists, including a Baroness who chose a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle that ended in mystery and tragedy. We visit Post Office Bay, where in 1793 British whalers established a barrel as the island’s post office to send letters home on passing ships. This tradition continues today, with visitors dropping postcards into the barrel without stamps.
PM: Cormorant Point / Devil’s Crown: Floreana Island
In the afternoon, visit Punta Cormorant, which features two strikingly different beaches: a green olivine beach and an iron-red beach. Between them lies a salt lagoon frequented by flamingos, pintails, stilts, and other wading birds. Late afternoon snorkeling at Devil’s Crown offers a vibrant underwater world, home to various corals, pencil sea urchins, wrasses, angelfish, and amberjacks, making it one of the best snorkeling spots in the Galapagos.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, and Zodiac rides.
AM: Charles Darwin Research Station: Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz is the second-largest island in the Galapagos, and its capital, Puerto Ayora, is the economic center of the islands. In the morning, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to see the Giant Tortoise and Land Iguana Breeding and Rearing Program. This was once the home of Lonesome George (now deceased), the last of his particular tortoise subspecies.
PM: Santa Cruz Highlands
We visit the Santa Cruz Highlands, where the dry coastal vegetation gives way to lush, wet fields and forests overgrown with moss and lichens. Our destination is the Tortoise Reserve, where we will have the chance to see these magnificent animals in the wild.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks.
AM: Black Turtle Cove: Santa Cruz Island
Today our Galapagos cruise comes to an end, but before we bid farewell to the Evolution and her crew, we visit Black Turtle Cove. This beautiful mangrove estuary offers a tranquil panga ride where we may see spotted eagle rays, diamond-shaped mustard rays, white-tipped reef sharks, Pacific green sea turtles, and a wide variety of shorebirds.
Activities: Zodiac Rides
Next, we transfer to Baltra Island airport for the local flight back to the mainland (airfare not included), connecting with your outbound flight.
