The In the Steps of Pirates & Darwin itinerary aboard the M/V Evolution is an 8-day journey through the Galapagos Islands, combining rich wildlife encounters with historic sites. Highlights include marine life at Punta Vicente Roca, flightless cormorants at Punta Espinoza, the red beaches of Rabida, the iconic Pinnacle Rock on Bartholome Island, and the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz. You’ll also explore Española’s dramatic cliffs and San Cristobal’s Kicker Rock, all while enjoying guided nature walks, snorkeling, and kayaking in one of the world’s most unique ecosystems.
Once aboard the M/V Evolution, enjoy lunch and a brief orientation as the yacht sails toward its first visitor site. The journey begins with a circumnavigation of Daphne Major Islet, home to a variety of seabirds including Galapagos martins, blue-footed and Nazca boobies, short-eared owls, and red-billed tropicbirds. Later in the evening, gather for a welcome cocktail and your first briefing before dinner.
AM: Punta Vicente Roca: Isabela Island
Visit Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island. Snorkeling here is exceptional due to the nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current that bathe the western side of the archipelago. You may encounter colorful fish, sea lions, penguins, and sea turtles.
PM: Punta Espinosa: Fernandina Island
Explore Fernandina Island, home to La Cumbre volcano, one of the most active in the region. At Punta Espinosa, a narrow strip of land, you can observe unique wildlife such as marine iguanas, sea lions, flightless cormorants, herons, egrets, and Galapagos hawks at close range.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, and zodiac rides.
AM: Urbina Bay: Isabela Island
Urbina Bay lies directly west of Volcano Alcedo on Isabela Island. After an easy wet landing (stepping into a few inches of water), we explore a stretch of uplifted marine reef that rose up to 13 feet (4 meters) from the sea. Highlights include sightings of giant land iguanas and giant tortoises. Guests may also enjoy snorkeling among marine life or simply relaxing on the beach.
PM: Tagus Cove: Isabela Island
In the afternoon, we visit Tagus Cove. A wooden stairway leads to a trail that winds around Darwin Lake through dry vegetation and ends at a viewpoint formed by spatter cones. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the bay and the distant Darwin and Wolf Volcanoes.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, kayaking, and zodiac rides.
AM: Pinnacle Rock: Bartolome Island
We visit Bartolome Island, known for its iconic Pinnacle Rock. Here, you may spot Galapagos penguins and sea lions. A hike to the island’s summit offers sweeping views of Pinnacle Rock and the surrounding beaches, where the crystal-clear waters of the bay cradle your yacht.
PM: Sullivan Bay: Santiago Island
We explore Sullivan Bay, one of the most geologically fascinating sites in the Galapagos. The lava field, formed less than 100 years ago, hosts only a few hardy pioneer plants like Mollugo and lava cacti. Shorebirds such as oystercatchers can be seen feeding in the tide pools. After exploring the lava terrain, enjoy swimming or snorkeling with playful sea lions off the nearby coralline beaches.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, and zodiac rides.
AM: Las Bachas Beach: Santa Cruz Island
We visit Las Bachas, a white coral beach that serves as an important nesting site for sea turtles. The name “Bachas” comes from the remains of landing craft left behind after World War II. Onshore, marine iguanas can be seen alongside flamingos and other wading birds in the nearby hypersaline lagoons.
PM: Rabida Island (Jervis)
Rabida Island is known for its striking red sand beach and cliffs, the result of high iron content in the volcanic material. In the waters offshore, sea turtles glide by and blue-footed boobies perch along the rocks. A forest of palo santo trees shelters a brackish lagoon where pelicans nest and flamingos feed. A nearby sea lion colony often relaxes on the red sands. A short hike leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the beach and lagoon, while sea caves further along the coast invite exploration.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks, snorkeling, and zodiac rides.
AM: Charles Darwin Research Station: Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz is the second-largest island in the Galapagos, and its main town, Puerto Ayora, serves as the economic hub of the archipelago. In the morning, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to explore the Giant Tortoise and Land Iguana Breeding and Rearing Program. This was once home to the famous Lonesome George, the last known individual of his species.
PM: Santa Cruz Highlands
We head into the Santa Cruz Highlands, where the dry coastal landscape gives way to lush, green forests covered in moss and lichens. Our destination is the Tortoise Reserve, where we’ll have the chance to observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks.
AM: Punta Suarez: Española Island (Hood)
Española, also known as Hood, is the southernmost island in the Galapagos and one of the most popular due to its breathtaking biodiversity. In the morning, we visit Punta Suarez, where you’ll encounter the largest variety of marine iguanas in the archipelago. You’ll also see masked boobies and blue-footed boobies nesting along the cliffs, as well as the island’s iconic waved albatross.
PM: Gardner Bay: Española Island (Hood)
We explore Gardner Bay, a stunning stretch of white sand beach. Here, colonies of sea lions bask in the sun, sea turtles swim in the shallows, and curious mockingbirds approach visitors without hesitation.
Activities: Hiking, nature walks, snorkeling, kayaking, and zodiac rides.
AM: Interpretation Center: San Cristobal Island
Today marks the end of our Galapagos cruise. Before saying farewell to the Evolution and her crew, we will visit the Galapagos National Park Visitor Center on San Cristobal Island. The center features engaging exhibits on the islands’ natural history, ecosystems, flora and fauna, and the impact of human activity. Your naturalist guide will provide an insightful overview using the center’s displays. A short trail leads to Frigatebird Hill, where both magnificent and great frigatebirds can often be seen nesting in the same colony.
Activities: Hiking and nature walks.
Following the visit, we transfer to the airport for your return flight to the mainland (airfare not included), where you will connect with your outbound flight.
