Fantastic Trip to Costa Rica

We, my wife, daughter and myself, had the greatest trip to Costa Rica. Everything, and I mean everything went smoothly from the time we arrived to the time we left. The guides were fantastic. They were informative, very personal and friendly, and got us to where we needed to be on time and without incident. We were picked up at the airport by a guide, Homer, who got us to our first hotel and then gave us a wonderful tour of the La Paz Waterfall gardens. He was very knowledgeable about Costa Rica and willingly shared the information. He was terrific and got us to our next location and made sure everything was taken care of before leaving us. We were very impressed.
We then stayed at Magic Mountain Hotel in Fortuna. The staff here was excellent, helpful and very warm and concerned about our needs and meeting our needs. One of the maids, Vanessa, even made an anteater out of towels, and left it on our bed. What a magnificent surprise when we got back from our day’s adventures. The water tubing and zip lining for the canopy tour was out of this world. The guides (Esteven, Jefferson, Miguel, Ramon) were fantastic. They were helpful, made both excursions fun and educational and made us laugh a lot. All of us could not stop talking about them, including my wife who was very hesitant about doing these things. She had a great time! Would recommend this excursion to anyone who will be close to the Arenal volcano area.
We then went on the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge excursion which was a land and water expedition. Joadan was our guide and Tonio was the driver. They were great also! Tonio could spot wildlife that we would have missed = sloths, iguanas, various birds. Joadan was very informative about Costa Rica, it’s vegetation and wildlife, and culture. We came away from this tour also very impressed and overwhelmed at the people we had encountered.
The next day we were off to the Arenal Hanging Bridges Natural History Walk with Bernardo as our guide. He helped us see things and experience things that many others missed not being with a guide. Seeing howler monkeys, a corral snake, a red eyed tree frog, a blue jean frog was tremendous besides the beauty of the landscaped and the hanging bridges. It was breathtaking and amazing. Bernardo made sure we hooked up with our next driver, Dennis Castaneda who had driven four hours to get us and return us to Tamarindo Beach and the Diria hotel. We stopped along the way and had a very delicious lunch of Costa Rican cuisine.
Dennis was just another example of the great service and friendliness that we had received on our trip. He made us feel at ease, was informative, willing to share and made sure our needs were taken care of. We had a great time on the beach at the Tarmarino Diria Hotel. The breakfast’s were nothing less than out of this world, the beach was breath taking and wonderful to experience, and the catamaran experience was just one more lifetime highlight. The crew was terrific. We got to see a hump back whale, sea turtles, schools of dolphins, colorful fish when snorkeling, and a large shark that swam up to our sailing boat. We were thrilled.
We can not speak highly enough of this trip and EcoAmerica Tours and the trip they planned for us. We were made to feel special and were taken care of like queens and kings. I would not hesitate at all in recommending their services to anyone. The people of Costa Rica were tremendous and this was a trip we will treasure forever. Pura Vida!!

Day 1 | Sunday | Welcome to Baltra | L.D.

AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
You will arrive at Baltra Island in the morning. After passing through immigration and collecting your luggage, a Galapagos Angel staff member will meet you and escort you to the yacht. Once on board, you’ll be shown to your cabin and have some time to settle in before enjoying lunch and a welcome briefing.

PM: North Seymour
On North Seymour, you may see Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and magnificent frigatebirds, which are abundant on the island. North Seymour was formed by a series of submarine lava flows mixed with sediment layers that were uplifted by tectonic activity. The island is characterized by its arid vegetation zone.

Day 2 | Monday | B.L.D.

AM: Chinese Hat Islet
This small islet is located off the southeast coast of Santiago Island. Its name comes from the distinctive shape of its summit, which resembles a Chinese hat. Chinese Islet is an excellent place to observe various geological formations, including lava tunnels and lava flows. Some of these flows were formed underwater and later uplifted above sea level. The presence of coral heads embedded in the lava confirms this unique geological phenomenon.

PM: Sullivan Bay
You will visit Sullivan Bay, located on the southeastern coast of Santiago Island. This site is particularly notable for its geology, as the area is covered by extensive lava flows. Small volcanic formations created by the cooling lava add to the dramatic landscape.

Day 3 | Tuesday | B.L.D.

AM: Darwin Bay
Visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay, which features a half-mile (0.75 km) trail that winds through mangroves filled with land birds. Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls are commonly spotted along the way. Farther down the path, you’ll find tidal pools where sea lions swim playfully. At the end of the trail, enjoy a spectacular view of the cliff.

PM: El Barranco
El Barranco, also known as Prince Philip’s Steps, is a steep, rocky path that leads up a high cliff face. From the top, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view. The area is also home to Palo Santo trees, along with red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrels, and Galapagos doves.

Day 4 | Wednesday | B.L.D.

AM: Egas Port
Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island is home to curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to a scenic coastline featuring tide pools and grottos teeming with wildlife. Galapagos fur seals can often be seen basking in the sun here. This area is also an excellent spot for snorkeling.

PM: Rabida
You will visit Rabida Island (also known as Jervis), one of the most colorful and volcanically diverse islands in the archipelago, and a fantastic spot for snorkeling. The visit begins on Rabida’s famous maroon-red sand beach. After an easy hike, you’ll reach a stunning lookout point with breathtaking views of the island’s dramatic landscapes. Rabida is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with abundant species such as several types of finches, Galapagos vermilion flycatchers, Galapagos hawks, and brown pelicans.

Day 5 | Thursday | B.L.D.

AM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inch hatchlings to 4-foot-long adults. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older individuals are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The young tortoises are cared for until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.

PM: Highlands
Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are a deep green that contrasts beautifully with the dry lower regions of the island. The predominant vegetation consists of Scalesia trees, which create a lush, green forest. The lava tunnels, stretching over half a mile underground, offer a unique and surreal experience when explored on foot. You will have lunch at this location.

Day 6 | Friday | B.L.D.

AM: Gardner Bay, Gardner Islet & Osborn Islet
This excursion takes you to the spectacular Gardner Bay. After landing, you can stroll along a beautiful white-sand beach among a lively sea lion colony or dive into the water to swim with playful sea lion pups. You may also spot curious mockingbirds exploring the shoreline.

PM: Suarez Point
On the trail to Suarez Point, you’ll have the opportunity to spot blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and albatrosses. Nearly all of the world’s 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses breed on this island, making it a truly unique wildlife destination. You’ll also visit a scenic oceanfront cliff that the large albatrosses use as a launching pad. One of the highlights is the famous blowhole, which sends seawater shooting into the air. The dramatic landscape offers excellent opportunities for photography.

Day 7 | Saturday | B.L.D.

AM: Santa Fe Island
Santa Fe Island (also known as Barrington) is home to a small, picturesque bay and anchorage on the island’s northeast coast. The bay features two visitor trails: one leads to a scenic viewpoint atop a cliff, while the other extends from a small beach into a tall prickly pear cactus forest.

PM: South Plaza Island
This small island, with its steep cliffs, was formed by uplifted lava and is now covered in Opuntia cacti. It is home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the archipelago, as well as colorful yellow and red land iguanas. The island’s most distinctive plant is Sesuvium, which changes color with the seasons—greenish to yellowish during the rainy season, and a vibrant red in the dry season (from late June through January).

Day 8 | Tuesday | Baltra / Home / Next Destination | B.

AM: Black Turtle Cove
Visit Black Turtle Cove, located in the northern part of Santa Cruz Island. This tranquil inlet is surrounded by mangroves and is accessible only by dinghy. The shallow waters provide a safe haven for young marine life, and visitors often spot black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, and various species of rays.

After your final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra Airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
