In San Cristobal
AM: San Cristobal Airport Arrival
Upon arrival at San Cristobal Island, and after passing through immigration and baggage claim, you will be met by a Grand Majestic staff member and transferred to the yacht. After settling into your cabin, you’ll have time to relax before enjoying lunch and a welcome briefing.
PM: David Rodriguez Breeding Center “La Galapaguera”
The David Rodriguez Breeding Center, also known as “La Galapaguera,” is located in Cerro Colorado on the southeastern side of San Cristobal Island. It is a relatively new visitor site and can be reached in about one hour by road from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The surrounding trees and shrubs are home to native land birds such as warblers, finches, and mockingbirds. Along the trails, you can observe giant tortoises living in the wild within a protected area, safeguarded from introduced predators like pigs and goats to help ensure their survival.
AM: North Seymour
On North Seymour Island, you may encounter Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and abundant magnificent frigatebirds. The island was formed by a series of submarine lava flows and uplifted sediment layers caused by tectonic activity. Its landscape is defined by arid vegetation and dry coastal scrub.
PM: Black Turtle Cove
In the afternoon, visit Black Turtle Cove on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island. This serene inlet, surrounded by mangroves and accessible only by dinghy, serves as a nursery for young marine life. Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, sea turtles, and various species of rays are often seen gliding through its calm, shallow waters.
AM: Pinnacle Rock
This morning, you will visit Bartholomew Island, home to the iconic Pinnacle Rock. The island is formed by an extinct volcano and features striking volcanic landscapes in shades of red, orange, black, and green. A stairway trail leads to the summit, taking about 30 to 40 minutes to climb. From the top, you’ll enjoy one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Galapagos. At the base, a beautiful beach fringed by sparse vegetation offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, with the chance to swim alongside Galapagos penguins.
PM: Egas Port
In the afternoon, explore Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island. This site is known for its diverse wildlife, including Galapagos hawks and agile lava lizards. A scenic trail leads to tide pools and grottos along the coast, where Galapagos fur seals can often be seen sunbathing. The area is also a fantastic spot for snorkeling, with abundant marine life just below the surface.
AM: Tagus Cove
You will visit Tagus Cove on Isabela Island, located across from Fernandina Island near the Bolívar Channel, which separates the two islands. This spot has been frequented by ships since the 1800s, often used as an anchorage. Trails winding past Lake Darwin and up to a ridge offer stunning views.
PM: Urbina Bay
Urbina Bay is located at the base of Alcedo Volcano on the west coast of Isabela Island, between Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay. In 1954, a major uplift caused the land to rise over 16 feet, expanding the coastline by half a mile and leaving marine life stranded on the newly exposed shore. Today, the area is also an excellent spot for snorkeling.
AM: Espinoza Point
Crossing the Bolivar Channel, which separates Isabela and Fernandina Islands, you will land at Espinoza Point. After walking past a colony of marine iguanas and a group of sea lions, you will arrive at the island’s highlight: the nesting site of the flightless cormorant. This area also offers an excellent opportunity to spot the Galapagos hawk.
PM: Vicente Roca Point
Comprised of two separate coves, Vicente Roca Point forms a large bay teeming with spectacular sea life. While snorkeling, keep an eye out for seahorses, sea turtles, and the strange yet fascinating Mola mola, or sunfish.
AM: Buccaneer Cove
Buccaneer Cove is a testament to Santiago Island’s history as a refuge for British buccaneers. These pirates once anchored in the protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat, among other supplies. The steep cliffs, where hundreds of seabirds perch above a dark red sand beach, create a magnificent sight.
Afterwards: Espumilla Beach
At Espumilla Beach, marine iguanas lounge while Sally Lightfoot crabs attract hunting herons, performing the dance of predator and prey right before your eyes. Snorkeling is highly recommended, as you may come face to face with an octopus, moray eel, shark, and a variety of other tropical fish species.
PM: Sullivan Bay
You will visit Sullivan Bay, located on the southeastern coast of Santiago Island. This site is especially interesting for its geology, as it is covered by extensive lava flows. Small volcanic formations created by these flows add to the area’s unique landscape.
AM: Bachas Beach
Bachas Beach, located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, is a popular spot for swimming. One of the few remaining signs of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. You may also spot flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles nest on the beach as well.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging from three-inch hatchlings to adults measuring up to four feet long. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The babies are kept until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
AM: Kicker Rock
This striking rock formation is located a couple of hours off the western shore of San Cristobal. Jutting out of the water, the rocks rise vertically hundreds of feet above the ocean, divided by a small channel. Although there are no landing areas, circumnavigation allows visitors to spot a variety of marine life.
Afterwards: San Cristobal airport departure
After this final visit, you will be transferred to San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
