In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra, in the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival at Baltra Island, you will go through immigration and baggage claim before being met by a Horizon staff member and transferred to the yacht. After boarding, you will be shown to your cabin, with time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.
PM: Pinnacle Rock
You will head to Bartholomew Island, home to the iconic Pinnacle Rock. The island features an extinct volcano with striking volcanic formations in shades of red, orange, black, and even green. A staircase trail leads to the summit (a 30 to 40-minute walk), where you will be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views in the Galapagos. Below, a beautiful beach fringed by sparse vegetation offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, where you may even see and swim alongside Galapagos penguins.
AM: Egas Port
Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island is home to curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed lava lizards. The trail leads to a scenic coastline with tide pools and grottos teeming with wildlife. Galapagos fur seals can often be seen sunbathing on the rocks. This area also offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling.
PM: Rabida
You will visit Rabida Island (also known as Jervis), one of the most colorful and volcanically varied islands in the archipelago, and a fantastic spot for snorkeling. The visit begins on Rabida’s famous maroon-colored sand beach. After an easy hike, you will reach a stunning lookout point with sweeping views of the island’s unique landscape. Rabida is a birdwatcher’s delight, home to several varieties of finches, Galapagos vermilion flycatchers, Galapagos hawks, and brown pelicans.
AM: Darwin Bay
Visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay, which features a half-mile trail (0.75 km) that winds through mangroves filled with land birds. Along the way, you can spot Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls. Further down the path are tidal pools where sea lions can often be seen swimming playfully. The trail ends at a stunning viewpoint overlooking a cliff.
PM: El Barranco
El Barranco, also known as Prince Philip’s Steps, is a steep, rocky trail that climbs up the face of a high cliff. From the top, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular view. This site is also home to Palo Santo trees and a variety of birdlife, including red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrels, and Galapagos doves.
AM: Mosquera Islet
Mosquera Islet is located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour. This small reef of rocks and coral, formed by a geological uplift, measures just 160 meters across at its narrowest point. Despite its size, Mosquera hosts one of the largest populations of sea lions in the archipelago and is home to numerous shorebirds. On rare occasions, orcas have been spotted feeding on sea lions in the surrounding waters.
PM: Highlands
Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are lush and green, offering a striking contrast to the dry, lowland areas of the island. The predominant vegetation here consists of Scalesia trees, which form a dense, mist-covered forest. One of the highlights of the highlands is a series of underground lava tunnels, some stretching over half a mile long, that provide a unique and surreal walking experience. Lunch is typically served during your visit to this area.
Afterwards: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging in size from 3-inch hatchlings to adults measuring up to 4 feet long. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The young tortoises are kept here until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
AM: North Seymour
On North Seymour, you may see Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and magnificent frigatebirds, all of which are abundant on the island. North Seymour was formed by a series of submarine lava flows containing layers of sediment that were later uplifted by tectonic activity. The island is characterized by its arid vegetation zone.
After this final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
