In San Cristobal
AM: Arrival at San Cristobal airport
You will arrive at San Cristobal Island in the morning. After clearing immigration and collecting your baggage, a Horizon staff member will meet you and escort you to the yacht. Once on board, you’ll be shown to your cabin, where you’ll have time to settle in before enjoying lunch and a welcome briefing.
PM: David Rodriguez Breeding Center “La Galapaguera”
The David Rodriguez Breeding Center, also known as “La Galapaguera,” is located in Cerro Colorado on the southeastern side of San Cristobal Island. It is a relatively new visitor site that can now be reached in about one hour by road from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. In the surrounding trees and shrubs, you may spot land birds such as warblers, finches, and mockingbirds. Giant tortoises are often seen along the trails. Although they live in the wild, they are protected within a managed area to keep them safe from introduced predators like pigs and goats.
AM: Pitt Point
Pitt Point, located on the northeastern tip of San Cristobal Island, is home to frigatebirds, storm petrels, and all three species of boobies: Nazca, blue-footed, and red-footed. A steep trail climbs up a cliff and passes through a ravine, leading visitors to an area rich in birdlife.
PM: Witch Hill
Located on the northern coast, this eroded hill and its surroundings feature one of the most picturesque beaches in the Galapagos, known for its white powdery sand and abundant wildlife. Visitors may spot sea turtles, rays, and several species of boobies. The clear waters offer excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling.
Afterwards: Kicker Rock
This striking rock formation is located a couple of hours off the western shore of San Cristobal. Rising vertically from the ocean, the rocks reach hundreds of feet in height and are separated by a narrow channel. Although there are no landing areas, circumnavigation allows visitors to spot a variety of marine life.
AM: Suarez Point
On the trail to Suarez Point, you will have the chance to see blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and albatrosses. This island serves as the primary breeding site for nearly all of the world’s 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses. You will also visit a scenic oceanfront cliff that these large birds use as a natural launching pad. Another highlight is the famous blowhole, which shoots sea water high into the air. The dramatic landscape provides excellent opportunities for photography.
PM: Gardner Bay, Gardner Islet & Osborn Islet
This excursion takes you to the spectacular Gardner Bay. After landing, you can stroll along a beautiful white-sand beach among a lively sea lion colony or dive into the water to swim with playful sea lion pups. You may also encounter curious mockingbirds exploring the shoreline.
AM: Bachas Beach
Bachas Beach, located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, is a great spot for swimming. One of the few remaining traces of the U.S. presence in the Galapagos during World War II, a floating pier, can still be seen here. Wildlife commonly spotted includes flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black necked stilts, and whimbrels. The beach is also a nesting site for sea turtles.
PM: Pinnacle Rock
You will head to Bartholomew Island, home to the famous Pinnacle Rock. Bartholomew is an extinct volcano featuring a variety of volcanic formations in red, orange, black, and even green hues. You will climb a trail of stairs to the summit of the volcano, which takes about 30 to 40 minutes, where you can enjoy one of the best views of the islands. A beautiful beach surrounded by the island’s only vegetation offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, where you may even swim with Galapagos penguins.
AM: Egas Port
Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island is home to curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to a coastline featuring stunning tide pools and grottos teeming with wildlife. Here, Galapagos fur seals bask in the sun. This area is also an excellent snorkeling site.
PM: Rabida
You will visit Rabida Island (also known as Jervis), one of the most colorful and volcanically diverse islands in the archipelago, as well as a great snorkeling site. The visit begins at Rabida’s famous maroon sand beach. After an easy hike, you will reach a stunning lookout with amazing views of the surrounding landscape. The island is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with abundant species including several types of finches, Galapagos vermilion flycatchers, Galapagos hawks, and brown pelicans.
AM: Darwin Bay
Visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay, which features a half-mile trail (0.75 km) winding through mangroves teeming with land birds. Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls can often be spotted here. Further along the path, you will find tidal pools where sea lions swim playfully. The trail ends with a spectacular view of a cliff.
PM: El Barranco
El Barranco, also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps, is a steep, rocky path that ascends a high cliff face. From here, visitors can enjoy a marvelous view. The site is also home to Palo Santo vegetation, as well as red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrels, and Galapagos doves.
AM: Mosquera Islet
Mosquera Islet is located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour. This reef of rocks and coral, formed by a geological uplift, is only 160 meters wide at its narrowest point. The islet hosts one of the largest populations of sea lions and is home to many shorebirds. There have also been occasional reports of orcas feeding on sea lions in this area.
PM: Highlands
Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are a deep green that contrasts beautifully with the dry lower parts of the island. The predominant vegetation in the highlands consists of Scalesia trees, which create a lush green forest. The lava tunnels, stretching over half a mile underground, offer a unique and surreal walking experience. This is also where you will have lunch.
Afterwards: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the “Fausto Llerena” Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inch hatchlings to 4-foot-long adults. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older individuals are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for photo opportunities. The young tortoises are kept at the center until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
AM: North Seymour
On North Seymour, you may see Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and magnificent frigatebirds, which are especially abundant on the island. North Seymour was formed by a series of submarine lava flows mixed with layers of sediment that were uplifted by tectonic activity. The island is characterized by its arid vegetation zone.
After this final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra Airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
