In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra, in the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival at Baltra Island, you will go through immigration and baggage claim before being met by a Horizon staff member and transferred to the yacht. After boarding, you will be shown to your cabin, with time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.
PM: Sullivan Bay
You will visit Sullivan Bay, located on the southeastern part of Santiago Island. This site is notable for its geology, featuring extensive lava flows that have created small volcanic formations and rugged terrain.
AM: Vicente Roca Point
Comprised of two separate coves, Vicente Roca Point is a large bay teeming with spectacular sea life. While snorkeling, keep an eye out for seahorses, sea turtles, and the strange yet fascinating Mola mola, also known as the sunfish.
PM: Espinoza Point
Crossing the Bolivar Channel that separates Isabela and Fernandina Islands, you will land at Espinoza Point. After passing a colony of marine iguanas and a group of sea lions, you will reach the island’s highlight: the flightless cormorant nesting site. This area also offers a great opportunity to see the Galapagos hawk.
AM: Tagus Cove
You will visit Tagus Cove on Isabela Island, located across from Fernandina Island near the Bolivar Channel that divides the two. This site has been used as an anchorage by ships since the 1800s. Trails winding past Lake Darwin lead up to a ridge offering spectacular views.
PM: Urbina Bay
Urbina Bay is located at the base of Alcedo Volcano on the west coast of Isabela Island, between Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay. In 1954, the area experienced a major uplift, causing the land to rise over 16 feet. This sudden change extended the coastline by half a mile, leaving marine life stranded on the new shore. Urbina Bay is also an excellent spot for snorkeling.
AM: Elizabeth Bay
Elizabeth Bay is located on the east coast of Isabela Island and features many rocky islets accessible by dinghy. Penguins and blue-footed boobies are often seen resting on these islets. With its clear waters and abundant marine life, the bay is ideal for snorkeling, where you can encounter schools of colorful fish, sea lions, and even sharks.
PM: Moreno Point
Moreno Point is located southwest of Elizabeth Bay. Here, a dry landing onto ancient lava flows is possible. The lava has left behind craters that have formed crystal-clear tide pools. By looking into these pools, you can peer into a vibrant underwater world as marine life drifts by. In the brackish pools, you may spot pink flamingos, white-cheeked pintails, and common gallinules. With careful observation, you might also see white-tip reef sharks and sea turtles.
AM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the “Fausto Llerena” Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inch hatchlings to 4-foot-long adults. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older individuals are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for photo opportunities. The young tortoises are kept at the center until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
PM: Twin Craters
You will visit the Twin Craters, located on opposite sides of the road between Puerto Ayora and Baltra. Though referred to as craters, these formations were actually created by the collapse of surface material into underground lava chambers and fissures. The surrounding scenery is lush and the view is truly breathtaking.
Afterwards: Highlands
Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are lush and green, offering a striking contrast to the dry coastal areas of the island. The predominant vegetation here is the Scalesia forest, which creates a dense and vibrant canopy. One of the highlights is a series of underground lava tunnels, some stretching over half a mile in length. Walking through them is a unique and surreal experience. Lunch will be served in this area during your visit.
AM: Post Office Bay
You will land on a beach and walk to a spot where 18th century whalers once placed a wooden barrel that served as an unofficial mailbox. The tradition continues today with Galapagos visitors. So, do not forget to bring a postcard, and do not be surprised if it reaches its destination before you get home.
Afterwards: Devil’s Crown
You will have the chance to snorkel around Devil’s Crown, the rocky remains of an offshore volcano that rise above the water’s surface. This site offers an excellent opportunity to spot a wide variety of marine life.
PM: Cormorant Point
Cormorant Point features a large flamingo lagoon, where other birds such as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails can also be seen. The island’s beaches are distinct: Green Beach gets its color from a high concentration of olivine crystals in the sand, while Flour Sand Beach is made of fine white coral.
AM: Santa Fe Island
Santa Fe Island (also known as Barrington) features a small, picturesque bay and anchorage on its northeast coast. The site offers two visitor trails: one leading to a scenic viewpoint atop a cliff, and another that runs from a small beach through a tall prickly pear cactus forest.
PM: Lobos Island
You will take an excursion to Lobos Island, which means “Sea Lion Island.” This appropriately named spot is home to a lively colony of noisy, playful sea lions who seem to welcome visitors with open, well, fins. The island also offers excellent snorkeling opportunities and the chance to see both blue-footed and Nazca boobies.
AM: Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center
This site is part of an environmental project. The tour of the center explores the natural history of the islands, including human interaction and conservation efforts. The Museum of Natural History explains the volcanic origin of the archipelago, ocean currents, climate, and the arrival of endemic species. The Human History exhibit presents significant events in chronological order, such as the discovery and colonization of the islands.
After this final visit, you will be transferred to San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
