In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra, in the Galapagos Islands. Upon arrival at Baltra Island, you will go through immigration and baggage claim before being met by a Horizon staff member and transferred to the yacht. After boarding, you will be shown to your cabin, with time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.
PM: Black Turtle Cove
Visit Black Turtle Cove, located on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island. This serene inlet is surrounded by mangroves and is accessible only by dinghy, preserving its untouched beauty. The shallow waters serve as a safe haven for young marine life, and it is common to spot black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, and various species of rays.
AM: El Barranco
El Barranco, also known as Prince Philip’s Steps, is a steep, rocky trail that ascends a high cliff on Genovesa Island. From the top, visitors are rewarded with a stunning panoramic view. The site is home to Palo Santo trees and a variety of bird species, including red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrels, and Galapagos doves.
PM: Darwin Bay
Visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay, which features a half-mile (0.75 km) trail winding through mangroves teeming with land birds. Along the way, you can easily spot Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls. Further down the path, tidal pools offer playful encounters with sea lions. The trail ends at a breathtaking cliffside viewpoint.
AM: Sullivan Bay
You will visit Sullivan Bay, located on the southeastern coast of Santiago Island. This site is especially notable for its fascinating geology, featuring extensive lava flows and formations created by past volcanic activity. Small volcanic cones and other dramatic features make the landscape feel otherworldly.
PM: Rabida
You will visit Rabida Island (also known as Jervis), one of the most colorful and geologically diverse islands in the archipelago, and a fantastic site for snorkeling. The excursion begins on Rabida’s distinctive maroon-colored beach. After an easy hike, you’ll reach a scenic lookout with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The island is a haven for birdwatchers, with frequent sightings of finch species, Galapagos vermilion flycatchers, Galapagos hawks, and brown pelicans.
AM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the Fausto Llerena Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. This facility is home to tortoises ranging in size from three-inch hatchlings to four-foot-long adults. Subspecies of giant tortoises can be seen interacting with one another, and many of the older individuals are accustomed to human presence, often stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. Young tortoises are cared for until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive in the wild.
PM: El Chato
Located about 22 kilometers from Puerto Ayora, the El Chato Reserve is divided into two areas: Caseta and Chato. Visitors typically begin their visit near the highland town of Santa Rosa. The Caseta route offers a more rugged experience, while Chato is more accessible. The reserve is an excellent place to observe giant tortoises roaming freely during the dry season, along with native wildlife such as short-eared owls, Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, Galapagos rails, and paint-billed crakes.
AM: Dragon Hill
Situated on Santa Cruz Island, Dragon Hill is one of the newer visitor sites open to tourists in the Galapagos Islands. A relatively long walking trail leads visitors along a beach and up to a lagoon lookout, where bright flamingos, pintail ducks, and land iguanas can often be seen.
PM: Bachas Beach
Bachas Beach is located on the north shore of Santa Cruz and is popular for swimming. One of the few remaining signs of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can still be seen here. The beach is home to flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest along the shore.
AM: Post Office Bay
You will land on a beach and walk to a spot where 18th century whalers once placed a wooden barrel that served as an unofficial mailbox. The tradition continues today with Galapagos visitors. So, do not forget to bring a postcard, and do not be surprised if it reaches its destination before you get home.
PM: Cormorant Point
Cormorant Point features a large flamingo lagoon, where other birds such as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails can also be seen. The island’s beaches are distinct: Green Beach gets its color from a high concentration of olivine crystals in the sand, while Flour Sand Beach is made of fine white coral.
Or: Devil’s Crown
You will have the opportunity to snorkel around Devil’s Crown, the rocky remains of an offshore volcano rising from the water. This site is excellent for spotting a wide variety of marine creatures.
AM: Suarez Point
On the trail to Suarez Point, you will have the chance to spot blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, and Nazca boobies. This island is the breeding site for nearly all of the world’s 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses. You will also visit a beautiful oceanfront site with a cliff that the large albatrosses use as a launching pad. Additionally, you can see the famous blowhole that spurts seawater into the air. The landscape is excellent for photography.
PM: Gardner Bay, Gardner Islet & Osborn Islet
This excursion takes you to the spectacular Gardner Bay. After landing, you can stroll along a beautiful white-sand beach bustling with a lively sea lion colony or dive into the water to swim with playful sea lion pups. You may also spot curious mockingbirds on the beach.
AM: Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center
This site is part of an environmental project. The tour of the center explores the natural history of the islands, including human interaction and conservation efforts. The Museum of Natural History explains the volcanic origin of the archipelago, ocean currents, climate, and the arrival of endemic species. The Human History exhibit presents significant events in chronological order, such as the discovery and colonization of the islands.
After this final visit, you will be transferred to San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
