In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, we will take a short ferry across the Itabaca Channel to the northern shore of Santa Cruz Island, where a bus will take us to the island’s highlands.
PM: Highlands: Santa Cruz Island
After lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit one of the best areas in the archipelago to observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat. These gentle giants can be seen roaming freely, feeding on grass and leaves, or relaxing in small pools. The area also features several intriguing lava tunnels. Later, we will travel to Puerto Ayora to board the M/Y La Pinta for a four-night cruise in a Twin or Double Cabin, with daily explorations of the northern islands.
Important Note: On arrival day, please dress comfortably and bring a small backpack with essentials for the rest of the day (such as medication, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle), as we will board the M/Y La Pinta in the late afternoon.
AM: Eden Islet
A panga ride takes us to Eden Islet, located off the coast of Santa Cruz. Here, we may observe blue-footed boobies diving into the water, along with reef sharks and frigatebirds. There is also an opportunity to snorkel, and if weather conditions permit, to ride in the glass-bottom boat.
PM: Sombrero Chino Islet
The tiny island of Sombrero Chino gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles a traditional Chinese hat. This relatively young islet offers a scenic and rewarding visit, featuring a 400-meter trail that begins at a crescent-shaped white-sand beach. The cove provides excellent swimming and snorkeling opportunities, with chances to see white-tipped reef sharks and Galapagos penguins.
AM: Bartolome Island
This morning, a true Galapagos icon awaits: Bartolome Island. It is a spectacular way to start the day, with a steep climb up a wooden staircase leading to a panoramic viewpoint. The effort is well rewarded by breathtaking views. After the hike, we board dinghies for a ride around the towering Pinnacle Rock, then enjoy time on the beach with opportunities for snorkeling. For a different perspective, we can also explore the marine life aboard the glass-bottom boat.
PM: Sullivan Bay: Santiago Island
After lunch, we board the pangas to land at Sullivan Bay on the eastern coast of Santiago Island. This site features a striking white coral sand beach ideal for swimming and snorkeling. A nearby trail leads across a dramatic lava field formed by an eruption less than 100 years ago. It is one of the best places to witness the volcanic origins of the Galapagos while also observing local wildlife.
AM: Prince Philip’s Steps: Genovesa Island
We enjoy a scenic panga ride along the cliffs before disembarking for a steep climb up a stairway carved into the rock. At the top, the terrain levels out, allowing for a captivating one-mile walk across the island. Along the way, we observe large colonies of Nazca boobies, frigatebirds, storm petrels, and, with luck, the elusive short-eared owl.
PM: Darwin Bay:Genovesa Island
Our visit to the island starts with a gentle walk to observe both marine and land birds in their natural habitat. For those seeking more adventure, an optional hike over sharp lava and uneven terrain offers dramatic views. Alternatively, we can head back to the beach to swim or snorkel in the calm waters of this stunning natural harbor. The more adventurous may also choose to snorkel along the cliffs or explore by sea kayak.
Our journey ends at Baltra Island, where we transfer to the airport for your flight back to the mainland. The island’s flat terrain, a result of its uplifted geological origin, was the main reason it was chosen as the site for an airport in the 1940s.
