In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you’ll pass through immigration and baggage claim before being greeted by your local host. A short transfer brings you to the M/Y La Pinta, where you’ll be welcomed aboard with a briefing, safety drill, and cabin assignment, followed by your first lunch on board, an introduction to the comfort and hospitality that awaits throughout your journey.
PM: North Seymour
Explore North Seymour, a flat, uplifted island teeming with wildlife. Here, you’ll have the chance to observe Galapagos sea lions lounging along the coast, vibrant blue-footed boobies performing their courtship dances, and the striking magnificent frigate birds with their inflated red throat pouches. The landscape, formed by submarine lava flows and tectonic uplift, is defined by its dry, arid vegetation, offering a stark contrast to the rich biodiversity it supports.
AM: Punta Vicente Roca: Isabela Island
This morning’s adventure takes place along the spectacular coastline of Punta Vicente Roca, explored by dinghy due to the absence of a landing site. As you glide past steep cliffs and submerged volcanic formations, your naturalist guide will interpret the striking geological features, remnants of ancient lava flows and layers of tuff stone. This site is also rich in marine life; conditions permitting, you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel in these nutrient-rich waters, often alongside green sea turtles, and possibly even penguins or marine iguanas.
PM: Punta Espinoza: Fernandina Island
In the afternoon, we visit Fernandina Island, geologically the youngest and one of the most pristine islands in the Galapagos. Punta Espinoza offers a remarkable juxtaposition of stark volcanic landscapes and thriving wildlife. You’ll walk across recent lava fields and mangrove edges, encountering iconic species such as Galapagos hawks, marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, and Galapagos penguins. It’s a powerful glimpse into a world where nature is still writing the rules.
AM: Urbina Bay: Isabela Island
This morning, disembark at Urbina Bay, a geologically fascinating site on the western shore of Isabela Island, formed by a sudden uplift of the sea floor in 1954. As you explore the black sand beaches and inland trails, you’ll encounter coral formations now stranded above sea level, along with colorful Galapagos land iguanas and, with some luck, giant tortoises roaming through the vegetation. This area offers a rare glimpse of how geological forces continue to shape the islands in real time.
PM: Tagus Cove: Isabela Island
In the afternoon, visit historic Tagus Cove, once a favored anchorage for pirates and whalers. Located on the northwestern coast of Isabela, this sheltered bay is framed by steep cliffs and volcanic formations. A hike up to the rim of Darwin Crater rewards you with sweeping views and a look at its mysterious saltwater lake. After the walk, enjoy kayaking or snorkeling along the rugged shoreline, where you may encounter sea turtles, penguins, and a variety of seabirds in this hauntingly beautiful landscape.
AM: Rabida Island: Jervis Island
Begin your day on the striking red-sand beach of Rabida Island, known for its rich iron content and dramatic volcanic landscape. A walk along the shore reveals a lively mix of wildlife, including marine iguanas, Galapagos mockingbirds, yellow warblers, and several species of Darwin’s finches. The calm, clear waters make this an excellent spot for beach snorkeling, offering the chance to swim among sea lions, colorful fish, and possibly even reef sharks. Non-snorkelers can explore the underwater world from the comfort of a glass-bottom boat, enjoying a vivid window into the marine biodiversity.
PM: Dragon Hill: Santa Cruz Island
In the afternoon, head to the north coast of Santa Cruz Island to visit Cerro Dragon (Dragon Hill), named for the land iguanas that inhabit the area. The trail winds around a picturesque brackish lagoon frequented by flamingos and other shorebirds. As you continue inland, the path climbs to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the bay and the western islands, offering a memorable perspective of the Galapagos’ ever-changing terrain. Keep an eye out for land iguanas basking in the sun among the cacti and palo santo trees.
AM: Puerto Ayora & Charles Darwin Research Station: Santa Cruz Island
This morning, visit the bustling port town of Puerto Ayora and the renowned Charles Darwin Research Station. Walk through a forest of towering prickly-pear cacti as you explore the tortoise breeding center, where you’ll see giant tortoises up close and learn about the ongoing conservation efforts that help preserve these iconic creatures. The station also serves as the hub of scientific research and park management in the Galapagos. After your visit, enjoy a relaxing, gourmet lunch served poolside at the Finch Bay Hotel, a tranquil retreat by the sea.
PM: Highlands of Santa Cruz Island
In the afternoon, head into the lush highlands of Santa Cruz, a striking contrast to the coastal zones. Here, you’ll stroll through a beautiful Scalesia cloud forest, home to unique flora and bird species, and visit the dramatic twin pit craters known as Los Gemelos, formed by the collapse of underground lava chambers. From December through mid-April, and weather permitting, the journey may include a special visit to observe giant tortoises roaming freely in their natural highland habitat, a truly unforgettable sight.
AM: Post Office Bay: Floreana Island
Start the day with a visit to historic Post Office Bay, where a simple wooden barrel has served as the Galapagos’ informal postal system since the 18th century. Visitors still leave postcards here to be hand-delivered by future travelers, continuing a centuries-old tradition begun by whalers. After exploring the site, enjoy a panga (dinghy) ride through the maze of coastal channels along Floreana’s north shore, offering close encounters with sea lions, rays, and marine birds. There’s also time for kayaking or snorkeling straight from the beach, where underwater life thrives in the shallows.
PM: Champion Islet & Punta Cormorant: Floreana Island
In the afternoon, enjoy snorkeling or a glass-bottom boat ride around Champion Islet, an extinct volcanic cone and a marine paradise brimming with vibrant fish and playful sea lions. Then, land at Punta Cormorant for a walk that begins on an unusual green-tinged beach made of olivine crystals. The trail leads to a brackish lagoon often visited by greater flamingos, pintail ducks, and other shorebirds. It ends at a pristine white-sand beach, a key nesting site for Pacific green sea turtles, where the rhythm of the surf and untouched beauty create a serene close to the day.
AM: Baltra Island – Departure
This morning marks the end of your unforgettable Galapagos expedition. After breakfast on board, you’ll disembark at Baltra Island and transfer to the airport for your flight back to the mainland. Baltra’s flat terrain, created by geological uplift, made it an ideal location for the archipelago’s first airport, constructed during the 1940s.
As you depart, take one last look at the unique landscapes that have hosted a truly remarkable journey through one of the most extraordinary ecosystems on Earth.
