In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Upon your arrival at Baltra Airport, you will be welcomed to the Galapagos Islands and and transferred to the M/Y Monserrat.
PM: Santa Cruz Highlands
You will visit the highlands of Santa Cruz and have the chance to observe the Galapagos giant tortoise in its natural surroundings. Explore the area and its incredible underground lava tunnels, some of which are more than 1 km long.
AM: Darwin Bay Excursion
Darwin Bay was formed by the collapse of the flooded caldera of Tower Island, another name for Genovesa. After landing on a small sand and coral beach, it is easy to understand why this island is a bird lover’s paradise. Among the species commonly found here are swallow-tailed and lava gulls, mockingbirds, yellow-crowned night herons, lava herons, Galapagos doves, and yellow warblers.
PM: Prince Phillips’s Steps Excursion
El Barranco, also known as Prince Philip’s Steps, was named after a visit by the British monarch in 1964. Its steep 81-foot stairway leads up a cliff face to the plateau overlooking Darwin Bay, where spectacular views can be enjoyed.
Once at the top, you will encounter Nazca and red-footed boobies, along with mockingbirds and finches, as you follow a palo santo trail. It is also possible to observe wedge-rumped storm petrels in flight and short-eared owls nesting among the rocks.
AM: Bartolome Island Excursion
During this excursion, you will hike to Bartolomé’s summit for a closer perspective on the islands’ volcanic origins while enjoying sweeping panoramic views. From the top, you can admire other Galapagos Islands in the distance as well as Pinnacle Rock, the island’s iconic towering landmark.
You will then have the opportunity to swim and snorkel around Pinnacle Rock, one of the most recognizable volcanic formations in the archipelago. Home to Galapagos penguins, playful sea lions, sea turtles, and a wide variety of fish, Bartolome and its surrounding waters offer an exceptional chance to explore the natural wonders of the Galapagos.
PM: Bowditch Point Excursion
This is a unique place that receives very few visitors. At this beautiful spot, you can relax on a powdery beach, snorkel around turquoise islets, and hike beside salt pools and dried white coral formations.
In the afternoon, you will visit one of the Galapagos Islands’ last off-the-beaten-path sites. This pristine location offers excellent snorkeling with large schools of black-striped salema, parrotfish, and Mexican hogfish, or you may choose to enjoy kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. Afterwards, spend time relaxing on the beach or taking a leisurely walk along the shore.
AM: Bachas Beach Excursion
Bachas Beach’s sand is made of decomposed coral, giving it a soft white texture and making it a favorite nesting site for sea turtles.
Here, you can spot abundant Sally Lightfoot crabs clinging to the lava rocks along the water’s edge, scavenging for anything they can grab with their claws. You may also observe a wide variety of wildlife, including flamingos, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and sea lions.
PM: Dragon Hill Excursion
Cerro Dragon (Dragon Hill) is considered a prime birdwatching site. From the beach, you will take a short walk to a hypersaline lagoon, saltier than the ocean, which is frequented by pink flamingos, common stilts, pintail ducks, and other bird species.
You will then pass through a Scalesia forest, an endemic ecosystem of the Galapagos. As a fascinating fact, there are only about 400 Scalesia trees left in the world, making this area especially significant.
AM: Buccaneer Cove Excursion
Your adventure will start by boarding a panga or Zodiac to cruise along towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations, once a favorite hideout for pirates who stopped here to resupply their ships with food and water. Along the way, you may spot sea lions lounging on the beach and seabirds nesting in the cove, before enjoying time to snorkel and kayak along the shore.
PM: Snorkeling Excursion: Puerto Egas
After an exquisite meal and a short rest, you will be invited to enjoy another snorkeling session right off the beach, exploring Puerto Egas’ vibrant underwater world. Keep your eyes open for rays, turtles, and reef sharks as you snorkel.
Following this activity, you will visit the large tidal pool area, where marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot crabs are abundant.
AM: Vicente Roca Point Excursion
Vicente Roca Point offers excellent deep-water snorkeling in one of the richest marine havens on Earth, the Bolivar Channel. This area is known for its high concentration of green turtles, and when visibility is good, sharks and rays can also be observed. You will take a Zodiac ride along the coast to observe a great variety of sea and coastal birds.
You may spot large numbers of Nazca and blue-footed boobies, noddies, brown pelicans, Galapagos penguins, and flightless cormorants. The upwelling of cold-water currents in this part of the Galapagos creates an abundance of marine life.
During the snorkeling session, you will swim along the cliffs and have the chance to explore two shallow underwater caves filled with rich marine wildlife.
PM: Espinoza Point Excursion
Espinosa Point is one of the most pristine places in the world, with no introduced species to date. From here, you will be able to see the island of Isabela across the Bolívar Channel, an area that boasts some of the highest diversity of endemic marine fauna in the archipelago.
Fernandina Island is the youngest of the Galapagos Islands and a favorite among visitors.
Upon landing, make sure to explore the tidal pools, where you will find abundant marine life, including small fish and mollusks. A little further along the trail, you will pass marine iguana burrows and sea lion colonies. The trail continues to an area where you can observe several flightless cormorants and their nests, an extraordinary bird species found only in the western Galapagos.
AM: Urbina Bay Excursion
Urbina Bay is a fascinating visitor site formed in 1954 when the shallow sea bottom uplifted, exposing a large coral reef above sea level. This site is located west of Isabela Island and offers spectacular views of the Alcedo Volcano.
The long trail begins on the beach, where you will make a wet landing. In this area, you will likely see wild Galapagos giant tortoises and land iguanas. As the trail loops back toward the shoreline, you will encounter colonies of the unique Galapagos flightless cormorant, a species that lost its ability to fly.
Urbina Bay is also an excellent spot for snorkeling, where you may get close to a Galapagos penguin colony and observe marine iguanas feeding underwater.
PM: Tagus Cove Excursion
Tagus Cove is located on the northwestern coast of Isabela Island. It is a historic site visited by Charles Darwin in 1835, where visitors have carved graffiti into the rock walls over the centuries. This cove was also frequented by whalers and pirates since the 1800s, who used the area as an anchorage. The site’s name dates back to 1814, when the British ship Tagus anchored there in search of giant tortoises to use as a food supply.
Here, you can admire a variety of seabirds, including blue-footed boobies, brown noddies, terns, flightless cormorants, and Galapagos penguins, depending on the season. Occasionally, you may also spot woodpecker finches, the Galapagos hawk, yellow warblers, or large-billed flycatchers.
After a dry landing, you will hike a trail to visit Darwin’s Lake, located on the slopes of Darwin Volcano.
AM: Black Turtle Cove Excursion
You will explore the mangroves by Zodiac, searching for rich marine wildlife in the meeting point between fresh and salt water. Be sure to keep an eye out for manta rays and sea turtles in this tranquil ecosystem.
After 8 days of incredible experiences, you will disembark at Baltra and take your flight back to mainland Ecuador.
