In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra in the Galapagos Islands. After passing through immigration and collecting your luggage, a Natural Paradise staff member will meet you and escort you to a private bus to begin your Galapagos adventure.
Important Note: Your first excursion will take place immediately after airport pickup, before boarding the cruise. It is essential to arrive in the Galapagos wearing comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Don’t forget to keep your camera handy to capture the experience.
Afterwards: Highlands
Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are lush and green, offering a striking contrast to the drier lowland areas of the island. The landscape is dominated by Scalesia trees, which form a dense, green forest unique to the Galapagos. One of the highlights of the highlands is the network of lava tunnels, some of which stretch over half a mile in length. Walking through these underground passages provides a surreal and memorable experience. Lunch will be served at this location.
PM: Fausto Llerena Breeding Center
You will visit the “Fausto Llerena” Tortoise Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. The center is home to tortoises ranging from tiny hatchlings measuring just three inches to adults reaching up to four feet in length. Different subspecies of giant tortoises interact with one another here, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans, often stretching out their heads for photo opportunities. The baby tortoises are kept at the center until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
AM: El Barranco
El Barranco, also known as Prince Philip’s Steps, is a steep, rocky path that ascends a high cliff face. From here, you can enjoy a marvelous view. The site is home to Palo Santo trees as well as red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, Galapagos storm petrels, and Galapagos doves.
PM: Darwin Bay
Visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay, which features a half-mile trail (0.75 km) winding through mangroves filled with land birds. Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls are commonly spotted here. Further along the path, you’ll find tidal pools where sea lions swim playfully. At the trail’s end, enjoy a spectacular view of a cliff.
AM: Espumilla Beach
At Espumilla Beach, marine iguanas lounge while Sally Lightfoot crabs attract hunting herons, creating a captivating dance of predator and prey right before your eyes. Snorkeling is highly recommended, as you may come face to face with octopuses, moray eels, sharks, and a variety of other tropical fish species.
Afterwards: Buccaneer Cove
Buccaneer Cove stands as a reminder that Santiago Island was once a refuge for British buccaneers. These pirates anchored in the protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat, among other supplies. The steep cliffs, where hundreds of seabirds perch above the dark red sand beach, create a magnificent sight.
PM: Egas Port
Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island is home to curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to a coastline featuring beautiful tide pools and grottos teeming with wildlife. Here, Galapagos fur seals bask in the sun. This area is also an excellent spot for snorkeling.
AM: Bachas Beach
Bachas Beach, located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, is a popular spot for swimming. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos is a floating pier that can still be seen here. You may also spot flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles nest on the beach as well.
After this final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
