In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport – Highlands: Santa Cruz
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, you will go through an inspection to prevent the introduction of foreign plants or animals and pay the park entrance fee, unless prepaid. A guide will greet you, help with your luggage, and escort you to your bus.
Your Galapagos adventure starts with a visit to the Santa Cruz Highlands, where the native Scalesia forest at El Chato Tortoise Reserve offers a unique chance to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. While breeding centers guarantee sightings, seeing tortoises in the wild is an unforgettable experience. The area can be moist and muddy, adding to the adventure if the tortoises have left their usual spots.
You will enjoy lunch at El Chato Reserve with beautiful views before continuing your exploration of the Highlands.
PM: Highlands: Santa Cruz – Boarding Solaris Yatch
The Twin Craters, located on either side of the road to Puerto Ayora, were formed by collapsing magma chambers beneath hardened magma domes and are not volcanic craters. They sit within a lush Scalesia cloud forest, home to unique wildlife such as the carpenter finch, known for using tools, and the vermillion flycatcher, a small red-breasted bird.
After the visit, you will take a short bus ride to the harbor to board the yacht Solaris. Once aboard, you will meet the crew and captain, be assigned your cabin, and then have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy your stay.
AM: North Seymour
Seymour is an uplifted island rather than a volcanic one, which makes it generally flat and scattered with boulders. It provides excellent nesting sites for a large population of magnificent frigatebirds. Blue-footed boobies perform their courtship dance in the more open areas, while swallow-tailed gulls perch on the cliff edges. Despite the powerful surf pounding the outer shore, sea lions haul out onto the beach and can often be seen bodysurfing.
PM: Mosquera
Galapagos sea lions are true beach lovers, and Mosquera offers beautiful white coral sand beaches that contrast strikingly with the blue water, attracting numerous sea lions. During a beach walk, you can observe various species of waders and sanderlings. Between the rocks, red clip crabs play hide and seek while you try to capture the perfect photo. If you are lucky, you may even encounter yellow-crowned night-herons or a red-footed booby.
AM: Darwin Bay: Genovesa
Inside the submerged caldera of Genovesa lies Darwin Bay, which has a diameter of more than 1.5 km (1 mile) and is nearly 200 meters (650 feet) deep. This small area will surprise you at every turn as you walk along a coral sand beach, cross barren lava formations and creeks, pass tidal pools and shrubs, and follow the top of cliffs further ahead. In these peaceful surroundings, each species occupies its ecological niche without disturbing others. Whimbrels and wandering tattlers forage actively along the surf, near resting Galapagos sea lions. Impressive frigatebirds and red-footed boobies nest in the mangroves, where you can also spot vocal species such as the yellow warbler, Darwin’s finches, and the Galapagos mockingbird. Uniquely, two subpopulations of the same species of large cactus finch differ in their singing.
PM: Prince Phillip’s Steps: Genovesa
Before landing, you will take a dinghy ride along the eastern arm of the caldera. As you approach, the soaring walls, rising 25 meters (80 feet) high, become truly awe-inspiring. Sometimes, a Galapagos fur seal rests or a seabird nests on one of the ledges near the base. After landing, you will hike up steep stairs to a bush of palo santo shrubs at the top. Red-footed boobies use these scarce nesting spots to avoid nesting on the rocky ground. Upon reaching the edge of the rim, the bushes open up, offering panoramic views, a refreshing sea breeze, and the chance to observe the amazing flying skills of countless seabirds. Following the exposed rim, you will first pass Nazca boobies and finally arrive at extensive storm petrel nesting sites, where, if you’re lucky, you may spot the well-camouflaged short-eared owl hunting for food.
AM: South Plaza
You will enjoy an unforgettable guided walk on South Plaza, the best place to encounter endemic Galapagos land iguanas, patient and photogenic subjects. You may also spot unique hybrids between the male marine iguana and female land iguana. At the upper rim, about 20 meters (75 feet) below, impressive waves crash against the foot of soaring cliffs. Clouds of petrels, storm petrels, shearwaters, and brown noddies perform spectacular flights, sometimes appearing to walk on the waves. Be sure to take your binoculars and look for the red-billed tropicbird, with its graceful long tail and spectacular mating displays. These cliffs are also a nesting site for the endemic swallow-tailed gull.
PM: Santa Fe
Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, this island was formed by uplift rather than volcanic activity, which is why it is mostly flat. Some theories suggest it may be the oldest island in the archipelago. Santa Fe is home to several endemic species, including the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land iguanas found on the islands.
After disembarking into the beautiful clear waters, you will encounter one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail, you will see numerous salt bushes and giant prickly pear cacti; gigantism is a characteristic of oceanic islands. Although vegetation is sparse, the island features two breathtaking beaches where sea turtles live. At the foot of the mountain, you may also discover a small colony of Galapagos penguins.
AM: Witch Hill: San Cristobal
After mooring at San Cristobal pier, you will begin your excursion to Witch Hill. The site’s main attraction is its coral sand beach, an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling. Witch Hill is the remains of a tuff cone and was one of the first sites visited by Charles Darwin. It features an impressive landscape where you can often see coastal and migratory birds, including pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas. At times, the lagoon dries completely, leaving salt deposits on the bottom. The people of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno once used the lagoon as a salt mine.
After your final visit, you will be transferred to San Cristobal Airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
