In Baltra
AM: Arrival at Baltra Airport
Upon arrival at Baltra airport, you will pass through an inspection point to ensure no foreign plants or animals are brought to the islands, and pay the park entrance fee of USD 200, unless it has been prepaid. A guide will meet you, assist with your luggage, and escort you on a short bus ride to the harbor. There, you will board the yacht Solaris. After greeting the crew and captain, your cabins will be assigned, followed by your first lunch aboard.
PM: Bachas: Santa Cruz
These two small beaches are located to the west of Turtle Cove. Their sand is made of decomposed coral, giving it a soft, white texture that makes the area a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches lies a small brackish lagoon where flamingos and other coastal birds, such as black-necked stilts and whimbrels, can occasionally be seen. The other beach is longer and features two old barges abandoned during the Second World War when the United States used Baltra Island as a strategic point to protect the Panama Canal.
AM: Whitetip Reef Shark Channel: Isabela
Whitetip Reef Shark Channel (Tintoreras in Spanish) is a group of small islets off the coast of Puerto Villamil and is one of the most emblematic visitor sites in the Galapagos. Its impressive concentration of wildlife can be easily observed during the tour. From a viewpoint, you can see herons perched on mangrove branches, while Galapagos penguins and sea lions are often spotted on land. Whitetip reef sharks, which give the islets their Spanish name, are commonly seen swimming in the tidal channels. Another highlight is the large breeding colony of marine iguanas, found in remarkable numbers.
PM: Wetlands and Tortoise Breeding Centre: Isabela
After lunch aboard, you will visit the local tortoise breeding center, where you can observe hundreds of giant Galapagos tortoises in various stages of growth. The hatchlings, though vulnerable, are especially captivating as some are even smaller than the size of your hand. Located just outside Puerto Villamil, this conservation project was established to protect the endangered tortoise populations from Isabela’s southernmost volcanoes. You may also have the chance to spot American flamingos in the area. Later in the afternoon, you will have free time to explore the village or relax on its beach.
AM: Moreno Point: Isabela
Moreno Point is located on the north coast of Isabela Island, between the volcanoes Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul. The trail follows a solidified pahoehoe lava flow leading into a complex of coastal lagoons. Its main attractions are the various species of birds found around the lakes and mangrove forests.
PM: Mangle Point: Fernandina, Tagus Cove: Isabela
You will enter the Bolivar Channel and navigate toward Tagus Cove. Along the way, you will observe how explosive eruptions have blown out parts of the outer rims of both tuff cones, creating their characteristic horseshoe shapes and forming Tagus Cove. Sailors once wrote the names of their vessels on the eastern cliffs of this area. A dinghy tour along the cliffs offers visitors a great chance to see Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants, and other seabirds. From the landing dock, a roughly 30-minute hike leads to the top of the cliff, where you can view Darwin Lake, an uplifted ultra-saline lake saltier than the sea. Several volcanoes are also visible from this vantage point. Be sure to look closely at the graffiti on the surrounding cliffs, which was left by pirates, whalers, and buccaneers centuries ago.
AM: Espinoza Point: Fernandina
Fernandina is the third-largest island in the archipelago and has only one visitor site: Punta Espinoza, located at the northeastern tip of the island. Marine iguanas gather here in larger groups than on any other island. They bask on the sand, swim near the shore, and sometimes even block the way at the landing dock. Among the unique species found here is the flightless cormorant. This bird has adapted its survival strategy and honed its skills for finding food in the ocean. Its wings, tail, and feet have gradually evolved for swimming. Seeing these birds is witnessing evolution in action.
PM: Vicente Roca Point: Isabela
While having lunch, the yacht will cross the Bolivar Channel for the last time to Vicente Roca Point, located at the mouth of Isabela’s seahorse-shaped coastline. As you enter a dark cave beneath a spectacular arch, the roaring echoes of the waves will surround you. Just around the corner, the collapsed amphitheater of Ecuador Volcano offers another breathtaking view. The calmer waters of the coves are well protected from the ocean swell and, although fairly cold, provide an excellent spot for snorkeling among various species such as sharks, penguins, pufferfish, and even seahorses.
AM: Espumilla Beach, Bucaneer Cove: Santiago
Espumilla Beach is a visitor site located at the northern end of James Bay on the western coast of Santiago. This beach has been restored as an important breeding ground for turtles, as it is no longer affected by digging wild pigs. Year after year, turtles return to bury their eggs in the cinnamon-colored sand dunes. Behind the beach ridge lie mangroves and two picturesque lagoons. The colony of American flamingos and other aquatic birds was once the main attraction, but after the El Niño climate event, heavy sedimentation altered the brackish water environment, reducing their food supply. A climb up a nearby hill rewards visitors with stunning views of the transition from sea to beach, mangrove, and dry palo santo forest.
PM: Egas Port: Santiago
At lunchtime, you will navigate south to Egas Port, known for its famous fur seal grottos, where you will enjoy a distinctly different guided walk along the coastline. The masterfully sculpted coastline features black basalt formations and polished, multicolored ash layers, creating a photogenic landscape with collapsed lava tunnels, natural arches, caves, and blowholes such as “Darwin’s toilet.” In a grotto directly beneath a spectacular rock arch at the end of the beach, a colony of sea lions rests in the shade. Hundreds of bright orange Sally Lightfoot crabs contrast vividly against the black rocks.
AM: Rabida
After lunch, you will make a wet landing on the remarkable red beach of Rabida, followed by two short guided hikes. The rusty color of the rocks and sand comes from oxidized iron particles. A shallow, green-fringed lagoon nestles against the beach wall, forming an oasis on the otherwise arid islet, which is covered with leaf-dropping palo santo trees. The salty pool attracts various aquatic birds, including pintails and occasionally American flamingos. Among the evergreen foliage of the surrounding mangrove bushes, many species of songbirds find shelter and breed. One of the most notable highlights is the large breeding colony of brown pelicans, the only pelicans in the world known to plunge-dive.
PM: Chinese Hat
Chinese Hat is a 52-meter (170-foot) high volcanic cone forming an islet off the rocky coast of Santiago, where a small colony of Galapagos penguins has settled. Since its primordial fire has only recently been extinguished, this is an excellent place to learn about volcanism, lava bombs, and lava tunnels. On the beach, you can also find curious pillow-shaped lavas topped with coral heads. These spheres originated underwater before being lifted above sea level. Beaches of white coral sand have formed, and holes in the eroding lava fields are filled with lava sand, allowing plants to take root. Galapagos sea lions and countless marine iguanas contribute to fertilization, creating favorable conditions for newcomers such as saltbush and the changing sesuvium carpet.
AM: Charles Darwin Research Station: Santa Cruz
The dinghies will take you to the tourist pier in Puerto Ayora, where you will be transported to the Charles Darwin Research Station and the headquarters of the Galapagos National Park Service. From here, essential biological research and conservation efforts for this unique yet vulnerable archipelago are coordinated. You will enjoy an educational stroll, with the highlight being the visit to the successful breeding center and enclosure of the Galapagos giant tortoises.
After your final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra Airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
