In San Cristobal
AM: Flight to San Cristobal Airport (SCY)
Upon arrival at San Cristobal Airport, travelers will pass through an airport inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. Visitors will also pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of $200 (unless prepaid). A naturalist guide will meet you at the airport, assist with your luggage, and accompany you on a short bus ride to the harbor.
PM: Colorado Hill: San Cristobal
In the afternoon, visit Cerro Colorado (Colorado Hill), located approximately 40 minutes southeast of the island by bus. This site is home to the Tortoise Protection and Breeding Center, established to help restore the population of the island’s giant tortoises. The center features a large corral, a visitor center, a breeding facility, and an interpretive trail. Along the trail, you’ll encounter a variety of native and endemic plant species, as well as local wildlife such as the San Cristobal Mockingbird, Yellow Warblers, finches, and the Galapagos Flycatcher.
AM: Gardner Bay: Española
Located on the northeast coast of Española Island, Gardner Bay offers a beautiful white-sand beach and calm turquoise waters, perfect for relaxing or snorkeling. The bay is home to a colorful variety of reef fish, and visitors often have the chance to snorkel alongside sea turtles or observe playful sea lions up close. This beach is also a vital breeding ground for green sea turtles, and its main attraction is the resident colony of Galapagos sea lions.
PM: Suarez Point: Española
This rocky promontory hosts some of the most impressive and diverse seabird populations in the Galapagos. The Galapagos albatross, which nests only on Española, returns here seasonally, offering a rare chance to witness its fascinating courtship displays. The area is also inhabited by blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, Galapagos gulls, and red-billed tropicbirds. Along the southern coast, powerful waves crash against basalt cliffs, forming a natural blowhole that sends water jets high into the air, providing dramatic views often accompanied by soaring seabirds.
AM: Post Office Bay and Baroness Lookout: Floreana
This site combines history, legend, and wildlife. Post Office Bay features a wooden barrel mailbox dating back to the 18th century, still used today by visitors to exchange postcards. The area also holds cultural significance as a landing site for early settlers, including the famous Baroness Eloisa von Wagner, whose lookout and nearby ruins can be explored. Wildlife sightings on the beach may include sea lions, green turtles, golden rays, and Galapagos penguins. This is the only colony found in the southeastern archipelago.
PM: Cormorant Point and Champion Islet: Floreana
This site is home to one of the largest flamingo lagoons in the Galapagos, surrounded by striking tuff lava formations. Visitors can observe flamingos, common stilts, pintail ducks, and other shorebirds. Cormorant Point also features two distinct beaches. Green Beach is known for its olivine-rich sand, while Flour Sand Beach is made of soft, white coral.
AM: Barrington Bay: Santa Fe
Located in the southeastern part of the Galapagos, Santa Fe Island was formed by uplift rather than volcanic activity, which is why it is mostly flat. Some theories suggest it may be the oldest island in the archipelago. Santa Fe is home to several endemic species, including the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, Galapagos mockingbird, rice rats, and one of the two species of land iguanas found in the islands.
After disembarking in the beautiful clear waters, you will encounter one of the many sea lion colonies. Along the trail, you can observe saltbushes and large prickly pear cacti. Gigantism, such as that seen in the cactus, is a common feature of oceanic islands.
PM: El Chato Reserve: Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz offers excellent opportunities to see giant tortoises in the wild, both roaming freely through the agricultural zone and within the El Chato Tortoise Reserve, which can be accessed from Santa Rosa or Salasaca. Some local farms provide meals and allow visitors to walk through their grounds in search of tortoises.
As you descend from the agricultural area into the transition zone where the reserve is located, introduced plant species give way to native vegetation. A pond at El Chato is surrounded by forest, where visitors may spot short-eared owls, Darwin’s finches, vermilion flycatchers, yellow warblers, Galapagos rails, and paint-billed crakes. Walking through the lush forest filled with lichens, ferns, and other epiphytes, you may hear the distinctive sounds of giant tortoises moving through the undergrowth.
AM: Twin Craters: Santa Cruz
The Twin Craters are located on either side of the road leading to Puerto Ayora. These impressive formations are not true volcanic craters. Instead, they were formed when magma domes hardened on the outside while lava continued to flow within. Over time, the empty magma chambers collapsed, creating two large sinkholes.
The craters are surrounded by a lush Scalesia cloud forest, home to high-altitude plant species found only in the Galapagos. This unique environment also supports wildlife such as the carpenter finch, known for using tools to find food. Visitors may also spot the vermilion flycatcher, a small bird with a striking red breast.
Transfer to Baltra Airport (GPS)
Assisted by your naturalist guide and crewmembers, you will board a dinghy with your luggage for the transfer to Baltra Island. From there, a shuttle will take you to the airport for your departing flight.
