In Baltra
AM: Flight to Baltra Airport (GPS)
Upon arrival at Baltra Airport, travelers will pass through an airport inspection point to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are introduced to the islands. Visitors will also pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee of $200 (unless prepaid). A naturalist guide will meet you at the airport, assist with your luggage, and accompany you on a short bus ride to the harbor. You will then board the Treasure catamaran, where the crew and captain will introduce themselves before you proceed to your assigned stateroom. Finally, you will enjoy your first lunch on board.
PM: Charles Darwin Station: Santa Cruz
While most Galapagos visitors come to observe and appreciate natural wonders, it is also fascinating to learn about the conservation efforts protecting the islands. Main attractions include the National Park information center, the Van Staelen Exhibition Hall, the Breeding and Rearing Center for young tortoises, and adult Galapagos tortoises in captivity.
AM: Eden Islet
Eden Islet is a paradisiacal tuff cone located just off the west coast of Santa Cruz, between Whale Bay and Dragon Hill. This morning, you will disembark to Eden Islet, where you can observe land iguanas and sea lions basking in the sun, as well as seabirds feeding in the nearby mangrove forests. The clear, calm waters make it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkeling among tropical fish, rays, and two species of sharks. Alternatively, you can enjoy a memorable kayak ride.
PM: Dragon Hill: Santa Cruz
The visitor site at Dragon Hill has been open since 1993. Located on the northwestern side of Santa Cruz Island, it features a trail leading to a hypersaline lagoon behind the beach, frequented by flamingos, pintail ducks, and other bird species. The area has been repopulated with land iguanas from Seymour, Isabela, and Santa Cruz islands. A short walk to the hill provides beautiful views of the bay.
AM: Whitetip Reef Shark Channel: Isabela
Just outside the port of Puerto Villamil, a group of islets rise from the ocean. These jagged black formations, dotted with mangroves and candelabra cacti, are the remains of a lava flow that ended in the sea. At this site, officially called “Tintoreras,” you can easily observe whitetip reef sharks from the shore in the crystal-clear turquoise waters. Turtles and graceful eagle rays sometimes glide through this calm channel, along with smaller fish and Galapagos sea lions. After this brief visit, you will continue to the northern part of Isabela.
PM: Wetlands and Wall of Tears: Isabela
Behind Villamil beach lies Las Diablas lagoon, the largest lagoon in the Galapagos and the breeding ground for the highest concentration of red flamingos. It is the jewel of Isabela’s swampy wetlands, which include salty and brackish lagoons in collapsed lava tubes and an ancient mangrove forest. These lagoons attract many wintering waterfowl and shorebirds, some migrating from Arctic regions. Afterwards, you will follow a trail to the Wall of Tears. From 1946 to 1959, Isabela was a penal colony where prisoners were forced to build a wall with enormous lava blocks. Due to the harsh labor and conditions, the site is known as “El Muro de las Lagrimas.” Along the route, you will find several interesting sites such as Cerro Orchilla, El Estero, Poza Escondida, Playa del Amor, and Pozas Verdes. You will likely see plenty of wildlife, including marine iguanas, a variety of birds, and possibly giant Galapagos tortoises in the wild.
AM: Moreno Point: Isabela
Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island, between Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanoes. The trail runs along a pahoehoe lava flow, which is solidified lava with a smooth, corrugated surface. This path leads to a complex of coastal lagoons, where the main attraction is the variety of bird species found around the lakes and mangroves.
PM: Tagus Cove: Isabela
A zodiac tour along the cliffs offers visitors a good chance to see Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants, and other seabirds. From the landing dock, a 30-minute hike leads to the top of the cliff, where you can view Darwin Lake, an uplifted ultra-saline lake saltier than the sea. From this vantage point, several volcanoes are visible. Be sure to look closely at the graffiti on the surrounding cliffs, which was left by pirates, whalers, and buccaneers centuries ago.
AM: Espinoza Point: Fernandina
Fernandina is the third-largest island in the archipelago and has a single visitor site, Punta Espinoza, located at the northeastern tip of the island. Marine iguanas gather here in larger numbers than on any other island. They bask on the sand, swim near the shore, and sometimes even block the path at the landing dock. One of the unique species found here is the flightless cormorant, a bird that has evolved to thrive in the ocean. Over time, its wings, tail, and feet have adapted for swimming rather than flying. Observing this bird offers a remarkable glimpse into evolution in action.
PM: Vicente Roca Point: Isabela
While enjoying lunch, the cruise will cross the Bolivar Channel one last time en route to Vicente Roca Point, located at the mouth of Isabela’s seahorse-shaped coastline. As you enter a dark cave beneath a dramatic natural arch, the echoing roar of waves creates a powerful atmosphere. Nearby, the collapsed amphitheater of Volcán Ecuador offers yet another stunning view. The protected coves feature calm but cool waters that are excellent for snorkeling among species such as sharks, penguins, pufferfish, and even seahorses.
AM: Puerto Egas: Santiago
Puerto Egas is a black sand beach located on the west side of Santiago Island. The beach was formed by volcanic tuff deposits, which created the distinctive dark sand that is one of the island’s main attractions. The site is named after Hector Egas, who attempted to develop a salt mining operation here. However, the project failed because salt was cheaper to obtain on the mainland, making the effort economically unviable. The site was abandoned, but remnants of the infrastructure remain.
PM: Rabida
After a wet landing on the striking red beach of Rabida, visitors can enjoy two short guided walks. The reddish hue of the rocks and sand is caused by iron oxide particles. Behind the beach lies a shallow lagoon bordered by lush vegetation. This oasis is the most fertile area on an otherwise barren islet, which is covered in palo santo trees. The salty lagoon attracts a variety of waterfowl, including pintail ducks and, occasionally, flamingos. Many species of songbirds hide and nest among the evergreen foliage of the surrounding mangroves. A major highlight of this site is the important breeding colony of brown pelicans, the only pelican species in the world that dives to catch its prey.
AM: Las Bachas Beach: Santa Cruz
Las Bachas consists of two small beaches located west of Black Turtle Cove on Santa Cruz Island. The soft white sand, made from decomposed coral, is a favorite nesting site for sea turtles. Behind one of the beaches, visitors can spot flamingos and other shorebirds such as Galapagos gulls and lapwings in nearby lagoons. The second, wider beach features the remains of two abandoned barges left behind by the U.S. military during World War II, when nearby Baltra Island served as a strategic base for protecting the Panama Canal. The name “Las Bachas” comes from a Spanish mispronunciation of the word “barges.”
Transfer to Baltra Airport (GPS)
You will be transferred to Baltra Airport for your return flight to Guayaquil or Quito.
